As a whole, due to demographics, baby boomers had it pretty easy. Because they didn't save personally and publicly (public debt), that puts pressure on subsequent generations. Can you get plots of maximum, minimum, and or yearly average ice extents over the years? It would be interesting to see what the standard deviations are and how 2016 looked relative to the standard deviation to see how unlikely it was from a purely statistical perspective assuming that there was no long term trend. If 2017 is a repeat, it would be important to see if there are correlations between consecutive years. If 2017 is a repeat, and there are no consecutive year correlations, the statistical chances of this being a coincidence would be very much smaller.
