I ordered the curcumin extract for my mother-in-law when she was battling what we thought was just liver damage. My wife takes it fairly often, and I think I will be joining her after reading this.

Another healhful thing to cook with that some say has positive effects wrt to cancer is turmeric. Indian folk cook with it regularly, i find it doesn’t have much effect on flavor of certain cooked foods, more that it can change the colour of your recipe.

The path to better health begins in the kitchen

I've read the same thing. That and garlic.

cumin != curcumin
4   anonymous   2018 Jan 3, 8:30pm

I don’t think cumin can fight viruses. Sounds like a village folk tale.

If you read the article, curcumin is a thought to be the most beneficial compound found in tumeric. Sorry for the mistake in the title, fixed.

Surviving the Daily Mail's health tips is one of the best signs of impervious, robust good health.

How come it didn't cure Steve Jobs. It's not like he wasn't aware: the dude was seriously into all that Indian shit and even went there during earlier stages of his illness.
8   Ceffer   2018 Jan 4, 1:35pm

Steve Jobs was in a megalomaniacal coma the last 20 years of his life. He always knew better. He just fucked himself in the ass with his health care because of it.

I get Tumeric in bulk on Amazon... Believe it or not, although it stains like a mofo some people use it to whiten their teeth.

Then again, I could be a youtube sucker.

A killer health mix is supposed to be black pepper, tumeric and coconut oil. The pepper helps with the curcumin absorption otherwise you poop most of it out. (Still good for your gut though!)

Then again, I thought I heard something on the news recently about coconut oil (and/or canola oil) being no-so-good-for-you after all.

Yeah, he should be alive now. He had an unusual form of pancreatic cancer with something like a 95% cure rate via Western medicine. Unlike the usual death sentence you get with cancer in that organ. Not so smart after all...
11   fdhfoiehfeoi   2018 Jan 8, 11:31am

The lady who cured herself did not have pancreatic cancer, so there's that. Additionally, I strongly believe cancer to be an environmental disease, otherwise how do you explain the huge spike in the 20th century, right around the same time plastics and pesticides took off. Lastly, health is a lifelong journey. Jobs may have been doing a lot of right things, but I'm sure he was doing at least a few things that weren't helping his cancer. High stress job for sure didn't help him.

It's the modern lifestyle our bodies were not designed for that could be the cause of cancer.
We eat unnatural foods.
We breathe unnatural air.
We live in unnatural surroundings.
Hawaiians are extremely healthy because they live in nature.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/05/29/hawaii-least-obese-state-healthiest_n_7451278.html Hawaii isn’t just a nice state for a vacation. It may also be the healthiest state in which to live, at least according to one metric: Only 19 percent of Hawaii residents suffer from obesity. That’s the lowest of any state, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index released this week.

Hawaii was also one of five states that reduced its obesity rate the most between 2013 and 2014, when the survey was conducted.

Cancer is a genetic disease. Genetics are influenced by environment which may cause inflammation and oxidation. Curcumin is an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory.

That's the last statistic I expected to hear from the state that brought us Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. I wouldn't discount the laid back island lifestyle, and low stress that accompanies it either. I was in Jamaica for a month during college. Everything just moves slower on an island.

I might believe that about the cases pre-industrial revolution. But when I hear that we're trending to half of all males, and 1/3 of all females getting cancer, there's no way that's genetics. Those numbers are from a talk I attended when I used to work at Illumina a few years back.

Pre industrial revolution most people didn't live long enough to get most cancers. If people had lived long enough back then they would have gotten cancers in larger numbers also. Cancer wasn't always diagnosed either.

There are lot's of cancers and lots of causes. I doubt there is ever going to be a single cure for "cancer" since there are so many different types.

Anything that damages the dna can cause cancer. Lots of cancer from chemicals in modern society. But people worked with plenty of carcinogenic and poison chemicals all through history. No one would seriously consider going back to pre industrial life so it's the cost of progress and living longer. Trump isn't going to help much with taking down tons of environmental regulations. Lots of other sources of cancer as well from genetics to the radiation everyone is bombarded with every day. Not getting cancer is about 1/3 luck, 1/3 living healthy, and 1/3 genetics.

Then there’s this

Pretty biased article. Medicine is an ongoing series of discoveries and treatments that may or may not work out. It takes years and many observed outcomes to see if a course of treatment is best and even then it may be heavily debated. There isn't some huge dark conspiracy underlying the process no matter how much you want believe there is.
19   anonymous   2018 Jan 9, 7:10am

Are you saying that the article is biased or the JAMA study is biased?

I don’t think there is some huge conspiracy going on

I think that medicine and healthcare are not impervious to the pitfalls of The Financialization of Everything. It appears that there’s plenty of wasteful practices in the industry and it’s safe to assume they’re not done in the nane of health but rather profits

At first, do no harm

The JAMA study and the article don't reach the same conclusions or have the same implications. If you think that practices that don't work out are wasteful and done in the "finacilastion of everything" then you definitely believe there is a huge conspiracy going on.

Many of these same practices and procedures are used in countries with government run health systems without a profit motive. Why would that be? Most research into new treatments comes out of university centres where there isn't a profit motive involved in implementing them. .

Very very few doctors (and those should go to jail) would go along with something that they didn't believe first and foremost was benefiting the patient. Money certainly comes into it. It's impossible for it not to in the US system. But your articles implication that years of treatment was to cynically cash in on something that people knew had no value is absurd. People really believed In health systems all around the world that early intervention would have better outcomes. Now there is a substantial body of evidence to study there is more evaluation. That's good. That's how progress is made.

While that second part could certainly be true, it's been shown that lifespan hasn't significantly improved for people who lived past infancy. There used to be a much higher infant mortality rate that skewed the numbers.

Are you really not aware of the huge pull the pharma industry has on medical practice in this country? Also, the assumption that modern medicine always has it right is a poor one given how slow the medical community has been to accept better methods of treatment, historically. At one time bleeding was thought to be the best cure, speed and cocaine were routinely prescribed for a number of ailments. Once you stop using critical thinking, in regards to any authority, you take a big risk.
23   Eric Holder   2018 Jan 9, 10:38am

Suddenly turmeric is everywhere. Even at Costco they have pallets of this shit in huge bottles in the middle of the floor. I guess some hedge fund got a hold of couple million tons of it cheap hence all the hoopla....
24   Patrick   2023 Jul 12, 12:55pm

I started putting turmeric and pepper on everything after reading that pepper is essential for getting turmeric's curcumin absorbed by your body.

And I started feeling sicker and sicker.

https://www.amjmed.com/article/S0002-9343(22)00740-9/fulltext

Turmeric is a commonly used herbal product that has been implicated in causing liver injury. The aim of this case series is to describe the clinical, histologic, and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) associations of turmeric-associated liver injury cases enrolled the in US Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN).

It seems that pepper does something bad to your liver when combined with turmeric.

I've been taking this every day for the last few years. I have a fair amount of cancer in the family and it also supposed to be good for reducing inflammation.

If nothing else, my lower back pain has gotten much better to outright disappearing most of the time now. My wife's knee pain is better too.

Never had any side effects. I started taking it after I started my intermittent fasting routine (which is also supposed to be good to combat cancer and inflammation) and normally take it after my first meal of the day (late lunch).

26   richwicks   2023 Jul 12, 3:05pm

I have heard that cancer requires tremendous amounts of glucose to survive, and going to a carbohydrate free diet is useful. This is the so-called "keto diet".

Who knows if it's true, but when I EVENTUALLY get cancer, and I will, I'll try it.
27   fdhfoiehfeoi   2023 Jul 12, 4:22pm

I take a tumeric supplement from Thorne. A reputable supplement company will combine the ingredients you need for absorption in many cases. I also take Cinnamon, but not by itself anymore after reading that can also cause problems. It's use is for controlling blood glucose. Douglas makes a supplement called Glucobrium that includes it. A bit pricy, but I just do one pill a day.
28   fdhfoiehfeoi   2023 Jul 12, 4:23pm

We also use Tumeric and Pepper in a lot of our cooking. Food is always superior to pills.

Yes, and the damaged cancer cells ferment for energy instead of using oxygen and the normal metabolic pathways.

I looked at Pat's paper and one set of people (7) had a genetic mutation that made them more sensitive. The other set of 3 it took 2-4x the time to get into the same condition.

Pepper only increases the absorption but apparently up to 20x.
30   Maga_Chaos_Monkey   2023 Jul 12, 6:40pm

I'm going to guess that it's safe and helpful for the conditions people use it for but not in large amounts every day. Give it a break...
31   KgK one   2023 Jul 12, 7:02pm

You can make tumuric milk. Also add it to popcorn adds great flavor , stains so be careful where you put it.

Most Indian foods have it as well.

For cancer, fasting for 7 days help. Kills n starves off cancer cells.

Yes but ideally supplementation with turmeric capsules is more helpful.

Only if you need large quantities, but it will ALWAYS absorb better in food.
