And as Twitter user Dylan Curran pointed out in a comprehensive twitter thread examining his own data cache, the extent and bulk of the data collected and sorted by both companies is staggering.

Google, Curran said, collected 5.5 gigabytes of data on him - equivalent to some 3 million Microsoft Word documents. Facebook, meanwhile, collected only 600 megabytes - equivalent to roughly 400,000 documents.

Another shocking revelation made by Curran: Even after deleting data like search history and revoking permissions for Google and Facebook applications, Curran still found a comprehensive log of his documents and other files stored on Google drive, his search history, chat logs and other sensitive data about his movements that he had expressly deleted.

What's worse, everything shown is the data cache of one individual. Just imagine how much data these companies hold in total.

Instead, the backlash to these revelations - which has been justifiably focused on Facebook - is so severe because the public has been forced to confront for the first time something that many had previously written off as an immutable certainty: That Facebook, Google and the rest of the tech behemoths store reams of personal data, essentially logging everything we do.

Never, ever give your cell phone number. That's what they want more than anything, it's got geographic info, possibly employment, customer visits (ie you're tracked to a Home Depot or 7/11).

Can't wait for Linux Phones.

Facebook Scans the Photos and Links You Send on Messenger.

Facebook Inc. scans the links and images that people send each other on Facebook Messenger, and reads chats when they’re flagged to moderators, making sure the content abides by the company’s rules. If it doesn’t, it gets blocked or taken down.

The company confirmed the practice after an interview published earlier this week with Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg raised questions about Messenger’s practices and privacy. Zuckerberg told Vox’s Ezra Klein a story about receiving a phone call related to ethnic cleansing in Myanmar. Facebook had detected people trying to send sensational messages through the Messenger app, he said.

The company told Bloomberg that while Messenger conversations are private, Facebook scans them and uses the same tools to prevent abuse there that it does on the social network more generally. All content must abide by the same "community standards." People can report posts or messages for violating those standards, which would prompt a review by the company’s “community operations” team. Automated tools can also do the work.

Well, you're not the product of patrick.net since I don't sell any info about users.

But I supposed that means I don't make money either.

Would be nice to make money, but only in ways I could live with, like subscriptions to newslinks, book sales, swag, donations, and non-real estate ads that don't target specific users. Working on it.

Suggestions appreciated. I need an email address to communicate with users, and do use IP addresses to block countries and individuals, but want to maintain as much user privacy as possible.

Facebook Blames "Bug" For Harvesting Users' Deleted Videos.

As if Facebook didn't already collect enough information on its users, the company on Tuesday admitted it accidentally retained videos that had been deleted by its users, claiming that a glitch was responsible for storing the clips, according to New York.

The company apologized for the issue, and promised it would permanently delete all of the videos that were recorded by users, but never shared.

Users that have requested their data from Facebook have discovered that the company stored texts, messages, phone logs and other personal data for years.

Many users who accessed the Download Your Information tool found the videos, accompanied by hundreds of megabytes of other embarrassing data, much to their chagrin.

Of course we should take Facebook at its word that this was an honest mistake and that Zuckerberg himself will see to it that the offended videos are immediately deleted, and permanently this time.

But it's more likely that these data were just caught up in the net as Facebook tried to collect as much personal information from its users as possible.

Facebook Admits Over 87 Million People's Data Was Shared Improperly.

Just a few short days before CEO Mark Zuckerberg does the 'perp' walk to Washington to testify to Congress, Facebook says the information of up to 87 million people, mostly in the U.S. may have been improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica, considerably more than the originally discussed 50 million.

As AP reports, this coming Monday, all Facebook users will receive a notice on their Facebook feeds with a link to see what apps they use and what information they have shared with those apps.

They'll have a chance to delete apps they no longer want.

Users who had their data shared with Cambridge Analytica will be told of that within that notice.

Facebook says most of the affected users are in the U.S..

Facebook confirmed that apps accessing events or groups APIs will lose access today and will have to be individually re-approved each time they attempt to access information like check-ins, photos, likes, posts, and videos.
