Looking at the property taxes of old people here in California can be a real eye opener. My ancient neighbors pay barely $1000/year property tax. The new neighbors: $22k/year. Yeah, that's impressive appreciation for what is essentially a shack on a tiny plot of nutrient-stripped land without water.
