U.S. cities that virtue signaled by defunding their police departments are seeing record crime levels, forcing many city leaders to rethink their basic levels of intelligence.

Here's what has happened in a few cities that voted to slash police budgets:

Homicide grew by 44% in New York, which had 1,531 shootings and 462 murders in 2020.
Homicides also increased 36% in L.A. to 350, leading the police chief to say "a decade of progress" has been erased.
Minneapolis, the center of the "Defund the Police" movement, saw a 46% increase in murders.
Oakland, California has seen a staggering 314% increase in homicides.
Portland, Oregon has seen murders triple.
Austin, Texas has had a 26% increase in aggravated assault reports.
Chicago saw a 65% increase in homicides from June 2020 to February 2021, despite arrests dropping 53%.
Philadelphia hit a 30-year-high with homicides in 2020, with 499 people murdered.
Even smaller cities like Louisville, Kentucky had a record high of 173 murders and is on track to surpass that this year.
The New York Times reported that many such cities are now expanding their police budgets to try to deal with these outcomes that absolutely no one could have seen coming.

Yes, but each business they shut down deprives themselves of revenue and makes them weaker.

They don't care about that. Stifling dissent is more important to politicians.

I wonder if BLM will ever figure out they were just puppets.

They will join Antifa, the homeless, and the unemployables in "Holiday" camps.

Useful idiots never survive the revolution.

It appears that the fake-news and their handlers (Democrats) are blaming Trump and the Republicans. Unfortunately, there are plenty of people who believe this story.

Video of the mass shooting tonight at 66th/Halsted. Seven shot, including a one-month-old girl, by gunmen who emerged from a black Jeep Cherokee with rifles. #Chicago

Vote Democrat, vote for massive crime wave.

Nope. Governmental policy setting falls under sovereign immunity. Courts have long held that the avenue to address that is at the voting booth.

I think FL governator/legislature passed a law that cities who allow burn loot and murder activities are liable for damages to businesses.

A man whose ingenious pop-up swimming pool kept the homeless cool during the recent heat wave was fatally stabbed in the same spot just one day later, according to Portland police.

Officers identified Tyson L. Morlock as the man who was found stabbed in the inner eastside Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood at Division Street and Southeast Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard around 3:37 a.m. on Thursday, July 1.

Despite life-saving efforts from paramedics, he died shortly thereafter in a nearby hospital, according to authorities.

Homicide detectives say the person who stabbed Morlock remained at the scene and was interviewed, but "has not been charged at this time and we are not releasing his name."

Huh? Self defense?

Homicide detectives say the person who stabbed Morlock...

... Morlock hooked up the pool to a fire hydrant at the Division Street underpass of Highway 99E, which is also known as Martin Luther King Boulevard.

"Morlock said he 'tried to steal' a slurpee from 7-11 this weekend...

The guy was a model citizen: stealing water, stealing slurpees....

Pretty much all the guns that blacks are murdering each other with in Chicago are illegally owned anyway.

Maybe just another gun law or two will finally make them listen!

https://spectatorworld.com/topic/hell-going-dc-shootings-crime/

The surge in crime is finally starting to affect Washington’s cozy and wealthy elite...

The left will blame this rise in crime on the alleged proliferation of firearms — Jen Psaki did just that today. They will not tell you that DC already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, or that the recent shootings that wounded innocent bystanders appeared to be gang-related. Their response to this rise in crime will be to crack down on legal gun owners and manufacturers. President Joe Biden recently suggested allowing people to sue gun-makers for liability when someone uses one of their firearms to commit a crime. This approach will do little to stop the crime surge that is occurring in DC and in other major cities across the country.

I strongly believe people need to feel pain for stupid decisions. These people voted to defund and for diversity, they should live those consequences.

https://notthebee.com/article/democrat-cities-nationwide-spent-millions-on-private-security-for-their-democrat-mayors

Democrat politicians in 20 U.S. cities, many of whom have cut police funding, have reportedly spent MILLIONS of taxpayer dollars on their private security (i.e., police protection).

I don't think you'll be surprised by which cities and their clown mayors made the list.

Chicago, Illinois | Mayor Lori Lightfoot
Cut 400 police officers in 2020
Spent $6.2 million on police protection from 2019 to 2020
New York City | Mayor Bill de Blasio
The city council approved reducing the police budget from $6 billion to $1 billion in 2020
Spent $358,000 on police protection for his presidential bid from 2019 to 2020
San Francisco, California | Mayor London Breed
Said the city would divert $120 million from law enforcement in 2020
Spent $7.8 million on police protection from 2018 to 2020
Baltimore, Maryland | Mayor Brendon Scott
Police budget cut by $22 million in 2020
Spent $3.6 million on police protection for Scott, State Attorney Marilyn Mosby, and Police Commissioner Michael Harrison in 2020
San Diego, California | Todd Gloria
Reportedly pushed for $4.3 million cut from police overtime budget
Spent $2.6 million on police protection in 2020
These city politicians don't want to abolish/defund/downsize the police's service for themselves.

That's the hypocrisy.
53   Misc   2021 Jul 29, 7:28pm

Not only do they want to defund the police, they want to take away your ability to protect yourself from crime, as well.
54   Patrick   2021 Jul 29, 7:35pm

Of course, so that you will need them to protect you.

More power for them, less power for you.

You know, way back when, corrupt mayor Alioto would withdraw police protection from an SF neighborhood, wait until crime got so out of control that real estate prices went down, buy up property, put back the police, and then sell for a profit.

Maybe we are seeing the same thing right now, but on a much larger scale.

Chicago cops TURNED THEIR BACKS on Mayor Lightfoot as she tried to greet them at the hospital after their fellow officer was killed during a traffic stop

This is a very hopeful development.

When all the police are fed up with leftism, then we will be free.

Defunding the police will further turn the USA into a third world country.

The crime and security problems in poor countries like Mexico are more severe because they don’t have the money to hire and keep an army of cops, contrasting with NYC which employs a lot of them.

I can’t imagine what it is like living in dumps like Detroit, Newark, St. Louis, Oakland, and other such hellholes.
Edit: I forgot Baltimore.
63   EBGuy   2021 Dec 22, 8:20pm

Bloody Portland is struggling to reverse the deadly consequences of its BLM-Antifa agenda, but it's too little and too late, writes journalist Andy Ngo
In October, Portland city council member Jo Ann Hardesty, who was the most vocal about defunding police and called last year's riots 'the new civil rights movement,' ordered the city place more traffic cones in the roads to combat surging shootings. It didn't work.
Last month city council voted to refund police in a new budget that added back $5.2 million to what was cut last year. The Gun Violence Reduction Team that was abolished has also been resurrected under a new name, the Focused Intervention Team—but it's not operational because few officers are volunteering to join.

Terrified Beverly Hills residents are flocking to buy guns from city’s only firearms store as LA crime soars thanks to woke DA’s policies - with latest home invasion seeing dad forced to watch as his disabled son was ZIP-TIED by burglars
Beverly Hills Guns has seen upscale residents from Santa Monica to the Hollywood Hills increasingly buying guns amid a rise in crime
Many are self-declared progressives, who've never even held a gun before, but who've been spooked by soaring crime in their ritzy neighborhood
Some have also discussed more elaborate security measures, such as armored cars, safe rooms and bulletproof glass
Hollywood's violent crime rate is up 25 percent over last year, with the homicide rate doubling and shootings up 54.2 percent over last year
The city has been plagued by a rash in slash-and-grab lootings that first began after Black Lives Matter protests ended with a riot on Rodeo Drive
More recently, a man taking out his garbage on Thursday was attacked by four or five suspects and his disabled son was zip-tied as they ransacked his home
Beverly Hills has now hired two private security firms to patrol neighborhoods alongside the police
Residents are also forming their own patrol groups as District Attorney George Gascon faces another recall effort for the rise in crime

In Manhattan it looks like they're going one further than defunding the police.

Looks like the justice system simply won't lock them up at all.

Whaddya think is going to happen?

Well, if people are smart in NYC, and I doubt they are, the citizens would start committing all sorts of crimes against the DA that are offenses that won't lead to incarceration.

No such thing, as ANY crimes against that DA would lead to incarceration. You can burn down a business, but don't you dare throw an apple core into the DA's yard.

My belief is that reliable government law enforcement (police as well as contract law and upholding standards) lead to a much more productive society. First, people don't have to spend so much time and effort protecting themselves or their property. Second, people can make long-term plans for efficient production of needed things. For example, why would someone build a factory and hire employees — a multi-year endeavour — if they thought the employees or consumers or government would just steal everything. A society without some sort of law and order can't progress beyond hunter/gatherer techniques. A local strong-man or war-lord can act as law-and-order, getting you beyond hunter/gatherer, but the society won't have human ingenuity unlocked beyond what a dictatorship provides.
