I'm guessing because the Feds are attempting to put everything travel related under their jurisdiction, even in states like Florida, they are mandating the Covid shot. So looks like the ATC's in Jacksonville decided to protest and took out a significant amount of flights. And I've never heard JAX was any sort of hub.

Now imagine if this happened at Midway, LAX, SFO, Kennedy or La Guardia, Denver. Imagine if it was more than just one day. Feds would have to pull military ATC's, and I doubt they have enough. Now imagine if we did this across other industries.

I like it, just don't fuck with my travel in 2 weeks. If 2% of the population that is gay can have such a huge voice, I do like seeing ATC making a difference with Covid. I know two or three ATC workers, one with a pretty popular Youtube channel (I know bad, money is money though).

Southwest has a huge presence in specific airports. Between landing fees, fuel and all the other shit, JAX might be a place they base more of their fleet in FL that is cheaper. Midway and Hobbie are obviously the big 2 for SW. They weigh your bags for weight distribution, but the municipalities that you land in charge fees based on estimated weight of the passengers, carry on and actual weight of luggage. That's why SW is the unicorn of airlines that doesn't charge for checked bags.

I haven't looked up landing fees, but 1 flight, 1 way could be upwards of $5k when I last looked it up.

Commercial aviation is so full of itself with self-importance. Betcha life went on as normal in Jacksonville and everywhere else for those who aren't part of the industry. Like it did when the planes were grounded after 9/11, and for a time during the pandemic.

The reality is, we can get along fine if the only roles for aviation were for law enforcement, military, emergency response like wildfires or helicopter medivac, and of course delivery of human organs for transplant. Everything else can wait for the ground level transport which also does not emit as much carbon per payload.

Airplane travel has been a standard for at least 70 years. Yes, we could get by fine without it. But I could say the same for the internet, electricity, and cities. Regardless of personal opinion, the airline industry going down would be more than enough to cripple our shit economy, so more than enough to end Covid.

It is said that container ships and possibly cruise ships emit the most unclean exhaust (incl. "clean" co2) though. Not sure how it compares to jet fuel which is emitted right where it "matters" unfortunately for co2 but prob healthier for humans on the ground. Personal air travel may be exaggerated and abused by the wealthy, but it is def necessary these days.

The thing is, it's physics: rail and ocean freight don't have to burn carbon fuels to fight gravity.

This is why those modes are cheaper modes of freight.

Well there is some thermic gliding as well once you reach cruising altitude. Also it's possible the pilots will follow soon as they know well heart related side effects will be exacerbated at high altitude.

The Epoch Times is the first major paper to pick up this story and do a good job covering it.

“ Southwest Airlines has canceled at least 1,000 Sunday flights as of 12 p.m. ET, according to flight tracker FlightAware, coming after numerous cancelations were reported Saturday.

“We experienced significant impact in the Florida airports [Friday] evening after an FAA-imposed air traffic management program was implemented due to weather and resulted in a large number of cancellations,” Alan Kasher, who oversees Southwest’s flight operations, in a statement obtained by several news outlets on Saturday.

About 800 Southwest flights were canceled on Saturday, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware. Other major carriers, including American Airlines and Spirit Airlines, appeared to have significantly fewer disruptions.

The Epoch Times has contacted Southwest for comment, including regarding whether the cancelations were due to staffing shortages related to the firm’s recently announced COVID-19 vaccine mandate for employees. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which oversees air traffic in the United States, also didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Southwest said in a statement on Saturday that it is attempting to “return to close to normal operations as we move into Sunday.”

We are working hard behind the scenes to minimize challenges and fully recover the operation as we take care of displaced Crews and Customers as quickly as possible,” the company said, without elaborating on the nature of the flight disruptions.

The firm’s Saturday statement also blamed the issue on air traffic control problems and the weather.

There was speculation on social media that the flight cancelations were being triggered by employees calling in sick en masse. In its statement Saturday, Southwest did not make reference to the speculation.

“Southwest Airlines must join our industry peers in complying with the federal government’s COVID-19 vaccination directive,” Southwest CEO Gary Kelly announced on Oct. 4, explaining that the company works as a federal contractor and needs to comply with President Joe Biden’s September vaccine mandate for federal employees and contractors. That prompted a lawsuit from Southwest’s pilot union, the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, which is seeking a court injunction against the mandate.

On its website Saturday, the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association blamed the cancelations on “a number of issues, but we can say with confidence that our Pilots are not participating in any official or unofficial job actions,” in an apparent reference to speculations about employees calling in sick.

“Our Pilots will continue to overcome [Southwest Airlines] management’s poor planning, as well as any external operational challenges, and remain the most productive Pilots in the world,” the statement continued. “They will continue to be focused on their highest priority—safety.”

Meanwhile, on Sunday morning, there were long lines at Southwest’s ticket counter in the Tampa airport, according to local media.

B.J. Romero, a passenger, told Fox13, “I have two kids. I have appointments. I have work. I can’t miss work. I have people relying on me, so I have to be home. That’s not going to work for me.”

When asked about whether Southwest’s claim about bad weather caused mass cancelations, Romero balked at the suggestion. “That sounds like baloney to me,” Romero told the station. “The weather is fine in all connecting areas, there’s no bad weather.”

“There’s got to be something behind the scenes they’re not telling us.”

Yeah. I suppose that if an airline blamed ATC for problems, some passive aggressive behavior by controllers while working to rules could wreak havoc for that airline.

Jet aircraft are more efficient the higher they fly. But no matter how high the airplane flies, cabin pressure is kept at 8,000 feet pressure.

Can't blame SW. This is going to be commonplace until we stop paying people to sit on their asses or forcing them to get vaccinated. I fly out on the 20th to SJU and then on to STT. First leg is SW, so I'm getting a bit nervous. Hoping they have this hashed out in a week and a half. I think they will. Their customer service is excellent, even if I have to get a bit direct and bichy. They've always pulled through for us as non-fare paying passengers.

This is what trip insurance is for though. Get it every time now.
