I believe Z is for one of the directions of the attack (from Belarus side) and not all of them. Same for the identification tape: red for the troops attacking from the North but silver in the East.

The smaller the sphere, the more conventional explosives you need in order to make it dense enough to hit criticality. So, you hit a limit where you need a more conventional explosives to make the core go supercritical.

Suitcase nukes, are impossible. At least to my limited understanding of chemistry. You'd be better off with a truck filled with explosives.
