Really, a BALLOON for spying doesn't make much sense, you can't really control its flight or direction. They've had solar powered airplanes for a while that can stay in the air indefinitely flying above the clouds. I don't know if you've seen a solar panel recently, they are basically about as thick as a few sheets of paper, meaning they are light.

I think something like that would be almost undetectable. I don't think it would even have much of heat signature, and it would be so tiny it would be hard to spot with anything. I suppose you could make it a partial dirigible as well.

Balloons are being considered for Martian and Venusian exploration. I read a shitload of articles in the past 3-4 years about the utility of High Altitude balloons for ELINT, battlefield surveillance, and even EMPs.

There's no reason China wouldn't say it's for science if it was.

The question is: What GOOD is the CCP doing by launching these balloons amid mystery and mystique?

The only viable answer is political and military.

If it was a big deal, we wouldn't know about it. If the US government was collaborating with the Chinese, the US would just claim it's THEIR weather balloon or just deny it exists at all.

Be aware of what kind of lies our government does get away with. They lied for 4 years about Russian Collusion, and they are lying about the election of Joe Biden. There's no independent press. When our "news" makes up a story, it's either complete bullshit, or a distraction. They control what we talk about. Do we talk about, say, the Ukrainian war anymore? They control the Overton Window.

The question is, what emotional response are people experiencing over this story? There are nukes out here which would be the only concern. So I’m not convinced that it’s not a spy ballon. If you’re going to launch one and kill the least amount of civilians MT and ND are perfect and you could cripple our land based nukes (that we know about).

Problem with that strategy is we have a bunch of nukes out at sea and airborne in a moment. I don’t know if it’s trolling or actual spying, but using a ballon is retardation in its purest form.

I said that I suspect that Biden will shoot it down, once it has completed it's land mission and China has gathered all of the data that it needs, I quiped they would shoot it down once it hit the Atlantic Ocean.
