I am pretty sure killing Zelensky (at least forcing him into exile) and toppling the Ukrainian government was one of Putin's main goals when they invaded Ukraine last year. Why else did Russia send all those tank columns to Kiev in the first months of the war?

Understand what this war is, it's a war between NATO/US and Russia using Ukraine as a proxy. Russia isn't interested in taking territory at this point, that's just part of the propaganda to their population.
