"Directed Energy Weapons" do exist, for example in microwaves, but they are about 50% efficient meaning you do about as much damage to the weapon as you do to the target, but the weapon may be much larger and can absorb the energy. That means a DEW that took out the world trade centers would have to have been HUGE.

You're being pointed down a dead end rabbit hole. Be more discerning.
