I used to work in that area when I lived in Chicagoland. It was a bad area even then. When we had visitors to the office, we'd immediately ask them if they parked on the street, and if they had, to move their car immediately to the garage. There was literally a continuous line of broken glass on the street from all the car break-ins.

Missed this comment. Bucktown is hipster central. Check out condo and home prices in the area. There's always gonna be robberies in wealthy, which it is now, urban areas. I can't recall when you said you worked in the area, but it is dramatically different. I know it used to be a firing range before my time there.

My first experience was about 2003(ish). Haven't been since 2019 roughly, but it's night and day different in the time period. I'd consider it "safe" for a Chicago neighborhood. But I do get your point.

Anyone that visits Chicago hasn't seen remotely what it is. Everyone goes to Navy Pier, Mag Mile, Millenium Park, Wrigley and maybe a hipster neighborhood to visit a friend. 2/3rds of the city is a shit show. Bucktown is not that anymore.

I always come back to this. We lost more people in Chicago than we did service members in Iraq AND Afghanistan over 20 years. If those two were wars, I'm within 90 minutes of an active war zone.... like right now. That's not including suburban ghetto towns/cities as well. Chicago metro region has 10k+ homicides versus about 7.5k military deaths in those two wars over the same time. Am I a combat veteran?
