Come to south Florida and walk on any jobsite. Very few are native born or second generation Americans.
They are framing, walling, finishing, concrete forming and finishing for complex forms like mansion entry ways and gazebos.
They are installing storm windows and doors, AC work, plumbing. They are working these jobs as Contractors and Crew members, apprentices and mechanics. They are working on the biggest jobs and the smallest jobs, they are working in the best neighborhoods and not so best. They are everywhere doing everything.

What you don't see anymore is "General Laborers" they simply don't exist. Every trade is expected to clean up after themselves and ferry and port their own materials and goods. You don't see unskilled guys on job sites pushing a broom, and moving materials. Those were the day laborers that American blacks and Hispanics were doing. Now the illegal aliens on the crews have to do it all from skilled to unskilled. Today's construction standards, the materials and goods require less finish work and artisan skill to do. The materials for the most part are prefinished and ready for inspection, compared to materials and goods in the past. Every thing has simple easy fasters and connectors, and the goods are modular and snap together more easily than ever.
These guys aren't working for peanuts they are driving brand new full size pickup trucks, 3/5 to 1 ton vehicles. It is their business, they are not just guys driving company trucks. I know them and the contractors on the jobs where I see them everyday. I do work for the GCs that hire them.

I see something similar in CA. Contractors in the remodeling business used to hire mostly Mexicans, now most of the workers are Central and South American. The displaced Mexicans are blaming it on the recent arrivals taking lower pay.

Yeah, we lost a generation of laborers. Most guys 25-40 couldn't wire a basic circuit. Frame a wall. I suck at drywall admittedly. I don't get that skill. But I can do most other things construction wise. I'm kind of a freak if I think about it. Good at a lot of things, but not great at one. Maybe woodwork I suppose.
