Corruption is profitable. Integrity is not profitable, or at least not so much and not so immediately.

So how can a country like the US maintain itself? Small countries usually do not have the huge burden of diversity like the US does. Diversity undermines unity as citizens, because all the various group vote for their own interests above those of the country.

The Downside of Diversity

From multicultural festivals to pronouncements from political leaders, the message is the same: our differences make us stronger. But a massive new study, based on detailed interviews of nearly 30,000 people across America, has concluded just the opposite. Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam -- famous for "Bowling Alone," his 2000 book on declining civic engagement -- has found that the greater the diversity in a community, the fewer people vote and the less they volunteer, the less they give to charity and work on community projects. In the most diverse communities, neighbors trust one another about half as much as...

In addition to the harm of diversity, we have a very cynical political elite class which really does not give a shit what happens to US citizens as a rule:

The problem is analogous to a body in which some cells decide to take all the resources for themselves and grow without control. That is, cancer.

The body has various ways of recognizing healthy cells and killing off the cancerous ones, but in some cases, cancers evade those mechanisms and then the whole person dies.

How can we reliably recognize corrupt politicians and summon the popular will to remove such people from power permanently?

I am not sure about your statement, that smaller countries are less diverse. Belgium has lots of immigrants. Luxembourg has 250 different nationalities citizens. The Netherlands have quite a serious number of Indonesian, Aruban and others. The UK has bunches of immigrants. The mayor of London (or his parents) is immigrant. You might find a homogenous population in Hungary, Switzerland, probably Finland, Austria and a few others. I think most Muslim countries have a homogenous population. I do not trust any studies of this kind. We have seen that people still help each other in dire situations. As for giving money to charities, I think most of us know some charities that are not so charitable. Lots of corruption there.
Are there un-corrupt politicians?

@ingrid Yes, some small countries have a lot of immigrants, but on average, the smaller the country, the more homogeneous.

And even in homogeneous countries, people may still split themselves up into warring factions, as in Somalia.
