Puerto Rico's power grid collapses, leaving island in the dark.

Tue, December 31, 2024 at 8:18 AM EST1 min read

(Reuters) -Puerto Rico woke up in darkness on Tuesday morning after a power grid failure left nearly all of the island without electricity.

Around 90% of clients were without power at 9:30 a.m. (1330 GMT), according to energy distribution company Luma Energy's real-time portal.

It will likely take 24 to 48 hours to turn the lights back on, "conditions permitting," Luma said in a statement.

"While the cause of the outage is under investigation, preliminary findings point to a failure in an underground line," Luma added.

Ivan Baez, a spokesperson for power generator Genera, called the grid failure a "major incident" in a local radio interview.

He said that the line believed to have failed was operated by Luma and brought down plants belonging to Genera as well as private generators.

Genera's website showed two plants starting up again at 9:30 a.m. in the U.S. territory.

Puerto Rico has long dealt with chronic power outages as its infrastructure crumbles. It was hit hard by Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 storm, in 2017.

The IRS and the Fed are incorporated in Puerto Rico. Does this mean the Vatican doesn't get its IRS money to rake off then deposit in the IMF and lend part of it back to us as interest bearing bonds?

Majority of PR wants to be a state and no clue why Maduro even gives a shit. It's about a 26 hour sail and 3-4 hour flight. WTF interest do they have?

Federal funds would massively help the place. Plus they could accept foreign ships, whereas currently everything has to be US flagged ships. Same with the USVI. Little over an hour flight from FL and 10 hours max via boat. This is clear trolling because of Trump with Greenland, Panama and Canada. Canada is the only one that doesn't make sense on our end. We don't need them, but they've generally been good neighbors.

We better give it to him. Because he's backed by Pukin and we don't want to provoke him into starting WW3!!!

No, the very slim majority consistently votes for retaining the set up they have now. The last referendum in 2024 deliberately did not include that option. Only then they voted statehood.

But statehood would impose the federal income tax on PR. Which would be on top of their tax system which is a copy of the federal tax system.

That's right. So if you pay 20% rate for PR's income tax, you'd have to pay an additional 20% for Federal under statehood.

Given how poor PR is, most ppl would be Takers and not pay anything anyway or even get new credits out if the deal. So are clueless about this.

But businesses (local and US subsidiary), middle class and definitely the wealthy peeps that moved there would be a different story.

In other words, the nurses as well as the doctors would have to flee to avoid 40%+ rates imposed on them.

I think the other territories like VI and Guam actually have this imposed upon them by DC while PR originally copied it for revenue capture purposes. PR has always had more pull with DC than the other territories.

So, if they got statehood they would have to dramatically cut their tax rates to at least match moronic California's. Else, their economy would completely crash on Year One of Statehood. That means transferring the bulk of income tax revenue capture to the Feds. And that would cost the locals dearly either way.
