India: It’s Worse Than You Think

Most Westerners know nothing about India beyond vague ideas about Hinduism, yoga, gurus, and maybe a dash of Bollywood. To such people, this article will be a rude awakening. ...

I had first returned to India with the idea of improving it, but after 11 years, I realized that India was a sinking ship, with worsening and increasingly shameless corruption, degraded people, and a society that was falling apart. I had never met an honest bureaucrat or politician. I applied to emigrate to Canada and my application was approved in a record three weeks.

I now advise East Asian and Western corporations on investing in India. Most of what I tell them sounds to them exaggerated, unrealistic, and unbelievable. After much dance, drama, and a great deal of lost money, they begin to believe what I tell them. However, this learning is never institutionalized because of a refusal to understand India. This is a form of political correctness, a poison eating away the innards of Western values.

When I was a child growing up in India, I learned that “might makes right.” Power was often abused, with those in control acting as if they had a God-given right to exploit and dominate others. The display of authority could be so extreme that questioning it or expecting those in power to do their duty might lead to retribution. Those in authority seemed to believe that their positions were not for serving others but for personal gain.

People who showed respect appeared to have meekly accepted a lower, subservient position. Kind people had to hide their compassion, for being nice was seen as a weakness.

In India, I have rarely seen someone in authority take the initiative to solve a problem he was responsible for. When I was at university, an underaged boy who worked in the kitchen was raped and sodomized by the janitors. I reported the matter, but not only did no one in authority do what was right — something well within their power — the authorities and fellow students threatened me with severe consequences if I pursued the matter further. Devoid of empathy, they also made fun of the boy and me.

Yes, there is an element of sadism here. There is some degree of pleasure that Indians take in the pain suffered by others. The attitude of the authorities was like that of the high-placed Delhi bureaucrat who told me that his Black Label whiskey tastes so much better because he knows that most Indians can’t afford to drink it.

This confuses Westerners. If they had power, even if they were corrupt, in a situation where there was nothing to gain or lose — no bribes to receive since both parties were poor, and no risk of offending someone well-connected — they would do the right thing and book the alleged rapist. These Indians would do nothing, not even lift a finger, unless there was a reward: money or sex. Their apathy was bottomless.

The article goes on about how incredibly low-trust India is as a society.

True? Any people from India want to opine on this?

How do you know that lower "caste" people cant move up?

The caste system is hereditary. One is born into a caste and cannot change it.

Do Catholics can move up to Protestants!

A Catholic who declares himself Protestant would be instantly accepted by the Protestants. The reverse is also true.

Not so with caste. Anyone who declares himself to belong to a higher caste would be rejected by that caste.

A better analogy might be blacks declaring themselves to be Jewish. This happens from time to time, but those blacks are not accepted by Jews because Judaism is more about ethnic and biological belonging than about religion.

According to historical records, approximately 1.5 million Indian soldiers served in World War I, while around 2.5 million Indian soldiers served in World War II, both fighting under the British Empire as part of the British Indian Army.

Not necessarily true.
I heard few stories from a old person who grew up in LA city suburbs, when he was young back in 60s
his family never bother to interact with Catholics as kind of untouchables!
After the freeways have been build, things changed particularly with later generations.
Move "up" "down" did not really work back them!
I know personally few Mormons who do not mingle with other Christian casts/denomination!

Imagine politicians and foreign religion enters and dictates that "lower" casts/denomination get a free
education, free gov "jobs", time based promotions, regular gifts from gov banks in the forms of loans;)
even free ATM cards for some categories for monthly payments from gov! (one can search and verify)
Most of them ready to stay at the same class and complain even more!
That is what you see in India while Abrahamic religions and their fake press talk about stereotype casts
as part of the divide and rule policy.
This is not any different from people associate racism with skin color!

What I have learned from this thread:
1. There is no caste system in India
2. If there is, it was imposed by the British
3. But if it persists today, it’s analogous to Protestants converting to Catholicism
4. But sometimes it’s the same as segregation against blacks.
5. There is no rape problem in India
6. If there is, it’s done by Muslims (or Hindoos, depending on the poster’s bias)

Summation: Get your shit together, Indians. Own your problems in order to solve them. Obfuscation gets you nowhere.

I mean that the caste system does not allow anyone to move from a lower to an upper caste. Not sure about the other direction.

This greatly reduces human freedom to succeed in life based on one's own efforts.

There is town in NJ where they live like 1800s, if your were black smith, or carpenter, farmer etc , your kids learned this with you when you were small. Same in india, lot of farmers, trades etc taught their kids trade, and so you did same job as your parent. Now with 1100 universities in india ( highest of any country) , anyone can do any major n get that job. Anyone can join army, not just khatiya. You become khatriya once u fight. I have seen lot of mba n well educated people sell tea n snacks to make more money. It's more like what
Kind of skills you have or develop.

Genetically warriors kids has more muscles than n business guy kids so most likely they will be also warriors.

If you take cast as job type, then everyone has option. India also has jungle dwellers etc. school is free but cant do much if farmers, jungle dwellers don't want to attend n get better paying jobs.

We need to trick China and India into a Ukraine type war.

Extra points if they have a limited nuclear exchange.

My definition of success is not having to obey a boss and yet not being homeless.
