Well, this is relevant. I found that my Y chromosome and my male-line relatives are from the McDonald clan of Scotland. The explanation is that I am probably descended from some McDonald who moved from Scotland to Ireland more than 500 years ago to fight as a mercenary for a local Irish "king". It's a fun idea. I'm not sure about the gallowglass thing, only that I have the same Y chromosome as most McDonald men, and that they did volunteer.
