TBP, I'm inclined to think it's just you, but as a Firefox & Flash user, could you do us all a service and specify the OS, Firefox, and Flash versions that you're using.
YouTube has had html5 video available for at least a year now (possibly two)
Don't blame Firefox, it's the Adobe Flash plugin. It's a piece of crap like just about everything from Adobe.
Flash video is nothing more than a lame ass attempt to prevent people from copying videos by wrapping them in a proprietary container. But it doesn't work for copy prevention anyway.
Install Flash Video Downloader and you'll be able to download any Flash embedded video including YouTube ones with a click of a button. You can even choose the resolution and codec for multi-encoded videos.
I also highly recommend Foxit Reader as an alternative to installing Adobe PDF Reader. Foxit is a much more light weight, spyware/nagware alternative to Adobe.
Now if only someone were to make an alternative to Adobe's flash VM...

No way, version 9.x is notorious for randomly seizing - even when not running flash.
HOWEVER - I think it's been fixed with version 10 (what I'm running now)... and I've been much happier with it.
I haven't experienced that and I'm on 9.0.1, but perhaps I should update. I was running Firefox 2 up to about six months ago because 3 and 4 were so bad in contrast.
I've also notice the flash plugin crashing in Chrome a lot.
I'd love to have a third party replacement for flash so I could get rid of Adobe altogether.
mobile flash does have some performance issues, but I'd speculate the performance issues have more to do with the mobile device itself, the fact that most flash isn't optimized for the hardware profile of most mobile devices, and the fact that a lot of flash objects stream in data and cellular data networks seem to have issues with with sustained data rates.
before you give up on flash and adobe I'd suggest upgrading FF to a recent supported version and updating flash to the latest version. the current flash release is 11.1.
and then also install adblock plus and noscript on FF. noscript and adblock plus are the two main plugins that keep me on FF.
I'm done with Flash
I'm sure the executives at Adobe just called an emergency meeting.
That was funny!
What I hate about Flash is that it seems they update the thing every day! Seems like most times I boot up I get a box asking me if I want to upgrade to the latest & greatest...and if I say "no" an annoying box keeps popping up to remind me. Today I checked "yes," it upgraded, then told me a newer version is available! Do I REALLY need version 10.2.13.22.260.34.12.56.33.212 - or can't I just wait for version 10.3? (or, God forbid, version 11.0??!!) Seriously!
Given that flash is the primary way to exploit computers today (take a look at the results of the Pwn2own contest), yes, if you're using flash you really should keep it up to date.
Those "daily" updates are security fixes.
I suggest not using flash at all though. Install flashblock if you must.
That's what I'm pretty sure is the problem. Many of the videos are trying to hack my computer and upload and install processes in the back ground. After I disable the WiFi, eventually the computer frees up and I can use it again.

Maybe you should stay off of the free porn and piracy sites.

Or use a very old version. There's something to be said about using old software, virus writers don't target it.

I hate to break this to you, but Patrick.net is all about porn, ogre porn.

Hey Comet Cursor told me I may have won $10,000.00 all I had to do is watch this video on a Turkish server.

I recommend this product to use instead of PDF reader:
More often than not, Youtube videos freeze my computer up. It happens at least 3 out of 4 times. Even on my droid flash locks up when viewing videos.
On my PC I turn off the WiFi, the only control that works when Flash hijacks my computer and locks it up unresponsive. After about 2 or 3 minutes, flash then releases my computer and the task manage finally comes up, from when I pressed CTR/ALT/DEL over three minutes ago.
I don't know what in the hell is going on, but if I don't disable the WiFi, my computer will stay locked up, until I press the power button and do a hot reset.
I just disabled Adobe Flash in Firefox, and I wont be watching anymore youtube.
Youtube is this big hot shot cutting edge tech player, division of Google, and they are still depending on cut rate shitty technology like Flash. Welcome to the 2012 buddy, sit somebody down over there at Youtube and learn some Goddamn HTML-5 that's the whole point. You don't need Flash anymore.
