I just wanted to point this out to those who think corporations are for the "free market".
The corporate charter itself is granted by the government.
True. The "defense" industry is all about crony-capitalism.
Ever see the movie Canadian Bacon?
I think I mentioned this before, but I wonder how much manufacturing we would have if we stripped out the defense industry.
It's beyond my powers, but I'd love to see a separate metric for "Civilian manufacturing", both jobs and GDP, that strips out the MIC.

Very little. Unless you consider McDonald's to be involved in manufacturing (like Bush did).
Patents, Copyrights, Trademarks...
US Government subsidies to large oil companies...
subsidies to pharmaceutical companies (as well as patent protection in govt. courts).
The biggest engine_of_economic growth_8_ways taxpayers_and the government are_necessary_to_capitalism (Alternet.org )
Eight ways...
Number 5 is one of the the biggest if not the biggest. Think of the "defense" companies and how much they depend on the government (not saying it is all bad, just that much of the spending with taxpayer dollars has benefited them). Companies such as Grumman, McDonnell-Douglas, Northrup, Raytheon, etc.
