Speaking about Mormons: weren't they forced to abandon polygamy by Federal government? What happens now when we have SCOTUS decision basically saying that Feds can't dictate to the states what marriage is or isn't?
The long-term, I'd expect legalization in Utah. Don't expect the modern LDS to return to it. They might BEGRUDGINGLY allow it out there in the fringe communities, but any attempt to bring it back to the core church would mean conflict. Think poisonings, assasinations, and skirmishes.
i am happy gay marriage seems likely to pass. why not equal rights for everybody.
years ago when they passed the lotto in california and the big spin was on tv. a woman won the million dollar spin. her entire extended family ran on stage and was jumping around screaming for joy. just then an even more elderly woman in the room with us said " now the fighting begins ". i always remember that remark and calm myself never to get too anxious about anything that seems too good.
Just exactly when did "equal rights" become politically correct "unequal protection, promotion and promulgation" with reverse discrimination and backlash?
Around 1970, and the beat goes on.

There aren't enough polygamists to push for laws treating polygamy the same as any other marriage. That is to say comparable to laws in several states allowing gay marriage.
IF there were a lot of people wanting it (polygamy), then it might be an interesting question. I don't think that there are even a lot of mormons wanting polygamy, as I believe the religion pretty much changed it's stance on it. IT's only a very small fringe subgroup that wants it.
Speaking of polygamy, how did it become part of a religion ?
My guess: Some self righteous and politically powerful dudes found themselves in their 40 or later, with their wife who is their age, and yet they sometimes had lustful thoughts about young women (or maybe perverted thoughts about very young women (girls)). Being so self righteous they decreed that it therefore must be God's will that they have sex and more children with these girls. After all, we are perfect and made in Gods image, why would we want sex with these girls if it weren't meant to be ?
You've got some talent for this kind of rationalization Marcus. Have you ever considered starting your own cult?

And we know this how? What if they are all "in the closet" afraid to "come out" after witnessing many examples of persecution of alleged polygamists by the state paraded all over prime-time TV. Homosexuals were invisible in USSR when it was a criminal offense to be one, so it looked like there weren't any at all, let alone "enough to push for laws".
This is indeed very likely, coming out openly swinging (literally) at least still requires balls these days ;)

No. But yuu just reminded me I haven't watched Kumaré yet. It's on Netflix streaming.
And we know this how?
Consider it an educated guess. I'd give odds on big money, that's how strong my opinion is. But you're right, I don't know and can't prove it.
I'll give you 4 reasons:
1) Given women's current status in our culture it's not that easy to find the kind of woman that wants that life (being a sister wife).
2) Men have reacted to this "Men on Strike"http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/1594036756 That is, less men are even marrying just one woman.
3) IT's expensive. MOst men can't afford one stay at home wife and multiple children. How many do you think can afford that kind of life now ? Even in ancient times, it would have been powerful men taking multiple women for themselves.
4)These days if a man lusts after young women to the point he's going to act on those impulses, he's more likely to get a girl friend (or hire one) and admit to himself that he's sinning, rather than pull that ignorant self righteous bs. OR in some cases he might be somewhat of a dirtbag who doesn't even see anything wrong with cheating on his wife.
I don't think the Mormons will want a return to polygamy in this day and age. Can you imagine paying alimony to three ex-wives??

Speaking about alimony: how is it going to be determined who is getting alimony after homosexuals divorce?
Are you really that dense???? The same way it is determined in a heterosexual divorce. Alimony is based on income not sex... A friend of mine is just got divorced and she is paying her husband 1.5k a month.
Homosexuals were invisible in USSR when it was a criminal offense to be one, so it looked like there weren't any at all, let alone "enough to push for laws".
The other extreme in history where homosexual behavior wasnt illegal and often practiced openly in their society, marriage was still considered between a man and woman. Marriage was used to create legal heirs who carried the family name and blood line. And of course laws around legal heirs carried on for centuries.
And people fought so hard to ensure that gay people aren't afforded the same rights as are straight people, bisexual people, asexual people. Doesn't matter - as long as they wish to remain in a committed relationship with another person of their same sex, they're horrible people who deserve no mercy.
All those poor Mormons (many out-of-state in Idaho & Utah) who fought so hard to ensure that gay people wouldn't have the same rights as they do...
Now they'll have to find someone else's rights to trample.
