One example of this is state/local government pensions: during the past 30 years of financialized abundance, the benefits and pensions promised to public employees were increased substantially. Public unions are a powerful political force in many states, and in eras of rising tax revenues, it's an easy political decision to increase public employee benefits and pension payouts.

I wonder what will happen inside the minds of the comments-section folks over there when cuts in military pensions transpire due to lower federal government resources. Will the same chorus of delight ring forth, or will we be treated to esoteric explanations of military pensions being the one magical exception to the rule that all government expenditure is waste?

Hiking public pensions is vote buying. Yet so is cutting taxes on billionaires, though you have to use their campaign contributions to buy votes. And Ahnold's "Vee shouldn't huff to pay a cah tax" cuts to vehicle license fees looked like vote buying to me.

Cullyfohnia should cease maintaining its roads, because you can't get blood from a stone, and if you tax people one more cent, they'll just leave the state anyway.
