The best thing the Western press can do, is shut the fuck up and just wait for this thing to play out. We start calling this kid a "Hero" and a "Leader" now. He'll end up at a North Korean holiday camp.

I'm with you.
For one thing, for the last decade the only people we ever heard about in Hong Kong were either the billionaires. or some squalid workers living in 165 sq. foot rabbit warrens inside 300 floor tower tenements.
Now..all of a sudden, there are all these well dressed young adults with plenty of free time to march in the streets. I know Millenials like to procastinate, but they had 15 years to fight this thing and suddenly they emerge a month before the takeover?
Meanwhile, I haven't heard a peep from the billionaires. Did they all leave already? I keep reading that PRC's richest have been absconding like crazy.
Supposedly the whole reason we "globalized" China is to bring Western style moderation and a degree of personal freedom. But its own best and brightest have merely taken the money and high-tailed it to Vancouver, BC!
Two Wongs make a Wight.
I think the "Wong" surname means "king" or something similar. So this guy is their MLK.

Don't tell me you fell for the "We will bring Democracy!" trick again. That trick has been played over and over yet so many still fall for it.
There is freedom now in China post-communism-- the freedom of Money! The freedom of the powerful and rich to dictate the terms and rob the masses. Sounds like a fascist state hiding behind the ruse of democracy. Sounds like Failed-Capitalism. Sounds like the USA.
China never had true communism by the way, it was a fascist state hiding behind the ruse of communism. Only the name has changed, not the game.
There are periods in history when unlikely heroes emerge. Save for Joan of Arc, rarely are they in their teens. No doubt, Beijing wishes 17 year old, Joshua Wong, was not so wise beyond his years.
