It runs rampant in a centralized government as it is now. The other reason is that we have current debt equal to the GDP, which doesn't bother the socialists but it does hamper the economy.

It was a lot worse in the guilded age or the railroad age. They just handed politico's cash in bags. Now if you're not to lazy to look it up you can see the bribes (whoops, free speech) going to your elected representatives

Abraham Lincoln was at the front of the line too, but it was also a time of the greatest economic expansion, which dramatically improved the standard of living.
Today we have had 13 years of war in no small part because of the lobbying of the defense contractors.
We have had TARP in 2008 and QE ever since all of it corporate welfare to the benefit of the banks.
We have the ACA which is nothing more than a subsidy to big Pharma and the health insurance companies.
The above is the cause of the income equality that the mutts like to whine about. But the reality is that an entire generation is being lost due to these economic blunders.
