What do you propose?

Perhaps less government would help?

Less as in less powerful, yes. I propose repealing the laws, passing a Constitutional amendment prohibiting such practices, and prosecuting all those who committed crimes under these laws.

It's you conservatives who want big government, a police state, and a huge military to maintain an empire.

3   Peter P   2014 Dec 14, 4:31am

Or rely more on crime-fighting artificial intelligence. Or privitized governance.

4   Dan8267   2014 Dec 14, 4:51am

Or end the war on drugs.

Bullshit. Repeal the entire homeland security.

That makes sense.

And decriminalize all victimless crimes including
- drug use
- prostitution
- profanity on public airwaves

And cut the "defense" budget by 90% or more.

And defund the NSA completely.

Now you sound like a liberal.

Too little government caused this. Small-government takers prefer that tourists and "those people" pay for their services. Hence hotel taxes are outrageous.

Raise local taxes to pay for police, and require that all local government services be funded through taxes and fees on residents.

Any monies seized should be directed to building anti-libertarian museums and interpretive centers, so that children will be able to detect self-righteous neckbeards and ideological slogan-reciting Randroids & praxeologists.

Finally, kick obese pigs off the force and close down all donut shops.

OK.

Maybe

Absolutely not.

No. A nut.

Any wealth gained through illegal means should face forfeiture. The money rightfully belongs to the public.
Dan has great ideas on how to increase crime and chaos, and none on attaining peace and prosperity. If Patrick.net had an annual turkey award, Dan would easily win it.

Agree with all of that except for that the the people commonly defined as liberals and defining themselves as liberals these days do not support most of this. Libertarians do.

What Mell said.

But if you (Dan) listened to any of what I post you would realize this.

Obviously you know even less about civil forfeiture than you know about torture. There is no burden of proof that the wealth was gained through illegal means. The cops simply seize it without any need for proof at all. Then it's up to you to prove (meaning pay to prove) to the court, usually the same jurisdiction as the cops, it wasn't gained through illegal means. The police force that seizes it gets to keep it. Just a tiny little conflict of interest.

That would give an incentive to the cops to seize assets from people they don't like. If the cops seize it, they must be able to provide just cause, and the seized asset should go to the state.

I think you are confusing "small government" with taxation policy. Small government means the government has little power, not that it taxes little.

I agree all funding for government services should come from those receiving those services through fees or taxation, not through fines.

The people defining themselves as Christians sure as hell don't believe in the teachings of Christ.

Whether or not someone calls himself or another person a liberal does not define what liberalism is. A liberal, as I've said a billion times on this forum, believes
1. All persons have the same rights. No one has privileges.
2. Rights, by definition, cannot be taken away. A freedom that can be taken away is, by definition, a privilege.
3. All persons are equal under law.
4. The only laws that should exist are those protecting rights. Note that this includes public property rights, which is why pollution should be illegal. The environment is public property.
5. People should be allowed to do whatever they want as long as they aren't violating the rights of others.

It's really not that hard to understand what liberalism is and why if you aren't a liberal, you're an asshole.

Right. When it comes to torture, the budget should be unlimited.

It is what Jesus would have wanted.

The Bible is a book about automatic weapons, torture and SUVs.

Oh, and stopping immigrants.

Overwhelming ignorance of the subject matter is no excuse. Then only just cause required in civil forfeiture is "I say so". The very act of legally carrying cash is just cause to seize the cash. The very first question in many traffic stops today is "do you have any cash in the car".

I'm really surprised. I would like to know their side.

Ask not what you can do for your country; ask what your government is doing to you.
