Russia made an attack on the validity of the Petrodollar with their cheeky underuse of it to fund oil and gas purchases, so the US went to (economic) war with the clear intent of debasing Russian currency. Placing doubt on the validity of Russian fiat money is the goal, and fundamentals like 4 trillion in reserve and a balanced budget make no difference to the banking cartels. Russia is being taught an expensive lesson: don't fuck with the USA oligarchy. Don't cast doubt on US currency or we will destroy yours.
"America, Fuck Yah!"

It has nothing to do with "petrodollar" or any such nonsense: Russia violated multitude of bilateral and multilateral treaties by attacking a sovereign country an annexing the part of it and now paying the price.

Russia won't tolerate US interference in it's near abroad, especially coups. There is no doubt the US financed and supported the overthrow of the duly elected Ukrainian Government. Nuland herself was recorded as not only bragging about the 'investment' of $5B in Ukraine, but naming her preferred choice for Prime Minster: "Yats is our guy." weeks in advance.
Dirtbag Nazi Grandchildren, Jon Demanjuk types, can only run the show there with lots of outside help.
Call it the Monroesky Doctrine.
The era of Team America: World Police is over.

You've got the propaganda right but not the story. Russia actually hasn't attacked anyone yet to date. Supporting "rebels" against an illegal government established by coup is more legal than supporting the new illegal government. To was all a pretext anyway. I think the petrodollar explanation has some legs. Nothing else makes a lick of sense.
Speaking of Monroesky Doctrine, Interesting Update to Russian Defense Policy recently:
MOSCOW, December 26. /TASS/. Russia’s revised military doctrine that was signed into law by President Vladimir Putin on Friday for the first time ever lists the presence of foreign private military companies in the immediate vicinity of Russian borders as a threat to national security.
The previous version of the doctrine that was adopted in 2010 did not mention them in any way.
“The emergence or the hotbeds of inter-ethnic and/or inter-religious tensions, the operations of militarized international radical groupings and foreign private military companies in the areas adjoining the borders of the Russian Federation and its allies, as well as the presence of territorial contradictions and a growth of separatism/extremism in separate regions of the world,†says the text of the doctrine published at the Kremlin’s official website.
I suspect that "Xe" is operating widely in Ukraine, at this point as trainers.
