Reddit deleted a paragraph known as a "warrant canary."
The paragraph had said that Reddit had not been subject to national security letters, which are used by the FBI to conduct electronic surveillance without the need for court approval, or "any other classified request for user information."
Any cursory inquiries - like would you consider it in the future - say on the grounds of national security ?
no, i don't believe "national security" could possibly be relevant to a public anonymous forum, but if one user threatens violence to another, i will go to the police myself with their email address and IP address.
so you can say "you're an ignorant asshole and i hate you" and that's fine.
but you cannot say "i'm going to find you and personally beat the shit out of you" because that is a felony.
I use reddit for a sub called "century homes" because I like to read about other peoples experience living in old houses. Even in this seemingly apolitical topic, there is a constant stream of trump bashing.
Not coincidentally, there is also a constant stream of reproachment from resident Karen's anytime someone paints with some neutral colors or, god forbid, strips some wood or removes some plaster without calling in the EPA SWAT team to remediate for lead or asbestos.
The beauty is that most of the people with the strongest opinions on what owners can and can't do to their century home is posted by people who rent.
I haven't bothered to look into their arcane rules, but it seems I can't post there because I haven't contributed enough content to their pre-approved list of subs.
There a lot of noise but I tune it out. That said I come here for memes and (mostly) intelligent conversation.
I have my beefs with a few user mildly, but I pretty much respect everyone here. I LOVE the addition of the hide thread feature. I don't want to ignore users unless it's an obvious bot. Not a knock on any user, but I would see the sexy picture thread every day in my feed. I like woman, but I don't need to see that every day. And yes I can scroll past. But that then bumps other threads that go to page two if I didn't check in for a day.
I can tune out the noise, but I miss something because of BS threads. And this includes the boss. Covid thread are annoying at this point. It's 2025. Not saying they're wrong, there's just a lot. It's been half a decade at this point. Keep fighting if that's your goal, but nothing is going to come of it. Now I can ignore the thread.
I was a funeral on Saturday, and when they asked if people wanted to stand up and say anything, a massive lesbian with a crewcut got up and went on and on about Palestine.

WTF?
It's virtue signaling for it's own sake. These types of people got on the VS train back in the late 'naughties, but don't have the sense to get off now that the train has derailed. It was always about creating a fake "community" - why do you think they kept changing the jargon about race and fag shit? It was a competition like high school - who has the coolest sneakers first? Infantile garbage.
This situation in Gaza is sad, tragic, and yes a humanitarian crisis... But nothing I can do within my sphere of influence will make the situation over there better.
Sorry for your loss. Funerals are rarely a good time.

Sums it up pretty well. I had it easy though. I hated the cliques of high school. All state athlete, band nerd, was drummer in an actual rock band, average grades but was friends with all the smart kids and they didn't look down on me. I could shoot the shit with anyone, no aggression towards me and nothing from me to anyone.
It goes south when you get pigeon holed into one clique and not multiple. Say goth for example. A lot of those people ended up supposedly gay. I swear it was just for attention because they never got it, I think ultimately from absentee parents. I think sports level the playing field as long as you're not the movie depicted jock ass hole.
I don't know about cities but kids are strangely kind to adults now where I live. I think college warps them if they go. I find high school students much more refreshing than the college aged students at least as an adult observing. College age they get cocky. I want to say, you do know ANY university would have accepted you if you paid. You're not special if you go to ASU, LSU or UofI. They take anyone with a heartbeat now. Started getting that way when I went to college. There's no more prestige, just fancy dorms and dinning halls for the dorms.

I'm noticing this phenomenon with my nieces and children of friends that are college age. The superciliousness and know it all arrogance - it's so bad it's an anti-survival trait. Listen to your elders - they're the ones who lived long enough to bore you to death.

Interesting that Reddit is mostly young men:

@Patrick, does PatNet have such a canary? Did it have one in the past? There were some comments about the idea.
Nope. I have had no demands for any user data. And that's a good thing.
In so far as being banned of reddit, I was banned from offmychest simply by posting in iamgoingtohellforthis. I wish I were kidding.

good idea actually. now there is a line in the about page which says "patrick.net has never received a national security letter".
It'll fire up in the next month or three when the temps get up and people in the ghetto don't have AC. That's when the real shooting starts.

Having seen this place from a housing forum focused mostly on the Bay Area to what it has evolved into has been.. something.
I wish Patrick every success. Having met him and his other half way back when, they are good people

Thanks @GreaterNYCDude
It was my wife's uncle's 2nd wife, so not close to me, though she did host our wedding at her B&B long ago and I'm still grateful for that.
Yes, I remember the good old days when I was literally Hitler for misgendering something.
