Should be fired for stupidity more than for dissing her employer. This is the same behavior that Jobs, Ellison and countless others in corporate and social circles engage in - we're just chimps competing for status.

What this scrap of genetic trash fails to understand is that it's "kiss up, kick down." Not that she ever will. On the day she dies, with grandchildren milling around in the hospital hallway, texting friends as they giggle and hope for the shrivelled old arthritic prune with the mustache to give it up so they can hit the pizza joints or go bowling, the world will be left with one less turd.

A former co-worker, legitimately disabled and dependent on pain killers, travels around and posts shots of herself doing active things which are just poses - she has to sit down most of the day and can't lift more than 5 pounds. Friends are trying to tell her to tone down her Facebook photos, since that's something the gatekeepers check to judge if you're faking it.

She may have tweeted herself out of a job, but, being female, she can always twat herself into another.

The IBM job was my first non-mediocre job. I've also worked in college in the labs and in tech support. I also shoveled snow during high school and junior high. None of those jobs were things I'd put on my resume because they were irrelevant to my career.

As for how I've turned out:

- no unemployed periods

Exactly. Conservatives don't even balance their checkbooks or pay off debt. Reagan and both Bushes devastated the middle class and turned surplus into massive debts.

Now the conservative rank-and-file are trying to persuade the young to take whatever shitty minimum-wage job instead of pursuing jobs that would help their careers. In IT I've seen people forced to retire at early because they couldn't get another job despite having skills. I've stayed gainfully employed throughout every recession and downturn precisely because I turn down bad jobs. Whenever I evaluate a job, I ask myself how will this job help me get my next job. If it doesn't, I refuse it. And that's why I have no gaps in my resume unlike the vast majority of software developers.

I'd strongly recommend to any younger adult in any field to follow this strategy. It's necessary for survival especially if your field is highly competitive.

So you did have a "mediocre" job as a teen that did not help your career. Why condemn that 17 year old girl? She may not be as smart as you, but she could be a future manager of a restaurant. Any work you do as a teenager should be put on your resume as it shows responsibility and dedication.

I was washing dishes and cleaning up at a local restaurant when I was in High School. I seem to recall earning a big $1.25 per hour. I saved up my money and before I graduated from High School I bought my own car. Nothing fancy but it ran.

I worked my way through college taking jobs that would benefit my career. As a result, I graduated with little college and career debt. I fully funded IRAs since I was 20 and fully funded 401Ks every year I had one. In college I bought a reliable, reasonable car rather than one that would get me laid. I fully paid off that car within six months of graduating college. I kept that car even though I could afford a much cooler one because I was financially responsible and had discipline.

My current car is only my second car. Yes, it's cool and attracts women like crazy, but I paid cash for it having saved up. It's currently 10 years old and drives like new because I maintain it well. It will be a classic as they aren't making the kind of roof this convertible has, and I expect to keep it for decades if not the rest of my life even though I could pay cash for another car. Again, valuing long-term prosperity over short-term desires makes a huge difference.

I've never bought a house because of the bubble, but my stock investments have done tremendously well, far better than any house, and all without timing because I follow the Vanguard approach of investing steadily and holding onto the S&P 500 index fund while minimizing costs. It's not sexy and I won't become a billionaire from stocks, but I will outperform over half of the investments (measured by money) by mathematical definition as the S&P 500 index pretty much represents the U.S. stock market as a whole.

When I find a good buy, I will buy a house with cash. I've saved up for many years. It is doubtful that I will have a mortgage and I don't need to purchase anything excessive.

What I've done in my life isn't rocket science. It's something that every young adult can and should do. Granted, a large part of my success is that I've been fortunate to have awesome genetic code that allowed me to be more intelligent than most people and thus I had a huge advantage in the tech industry, but you don't have to be intelligent to succeed in America. Every person has some talent. You just have to find out what talents you have, which ones can translate into a useful service to society, and which ones you enjoy using. Once you find a match, you just have to work hard at developing your talent and practice fiscal discipline living within your means. You won't become a billionaire by doing this, but you will probably be financially secure.

That's not to say that luck plays no role. Opportunities come unpredictably. Careers can be be launched by being at the right place at the right time. But you maximize the probability that you will be ready for an opportunity by taking the advice I've offered in this thread.

A job at McDonald's is not going to prepare you for a career. There is no shame in taking a job simply to pay the bills, but often it is worth giving up a job to pursue even an unpaid internship that will let you get a better job and one in your career choice. It is a tragedy that so many college graduates are working in fast food instead of in their industry. Since every step in a career is built on the previous step, the setback of spending years in mediocre jobs will end up costing those graduates hundreds of thousands if not over a million dollars in today's money by the time they retire because they will not rise to the same level as they could have if their careers took off earlier.

Time, as I've stated, is your most precious and limited commodity. Trade it sparingly for once you do you cannot trade back.
