That is because of Cecil the lion lovers brigade. A couple of years ago, a mountain lion got close to a school in the peninsula. The law officers were forced to shoot it-because there were kids and families nearby. There was a horrific outcry and I think even death threats against the "killers". Strange bunch these far lefties.
Our coyotes in dublin are some cool jackals, they just snatch gophers here and there, but I actually saw one walk up next to a human female and her little kid and didn't bother them.

Hello Everyone,
we live on Inspiration Circle. As many of you, our home backs up to open space. On Friday June 26, at 6:00am, I observed our neighbor's cat walking on our back fence. It suddenly darted away from our yard when I witnessed a coyote effortlessly and incredibly swiftly jump up and over our 6 foot fence towards the cat, then over into our neighbors' yard. Next, the coyote chased the cat and they jumped into our yard. All I could see was the coyote racing around our lawn like a dog. Then, the coyote jumped up on our fence (picture of the coyote is in the newspaper article below) where it sat, coming and going in and out of our backyard for a couple hours. (I did not let our children or our golden retriever in the back yard) Later that day, I found a pool of blood on our patio, followed by the remains of the cat under bushed in the back corner of our yard, below where the coyote was hovering. It was so sad and upsetting for my neighbors, but this incident was shocking and so frightening to see how effortlessly the coyote could jump up on and over our 6 foot fence, as well as kill pet. This particular a pet. This coyote appeared to be younger, lighter white/tan colored, yet seemed full size. If you observe this coyote, please advise your neighbors. This coyote was hungry, stalking, aggressive, and very bold.
Please be careful with your small pets, maybe even small children, especially at night and the early morning hours in your yards or walking in the less populated areas. We have lived here since 1998 and never have we seen anything like this before. In rural places like Sunol, coyote attacks are commonplace, but I did not expect this scary wildlife experience in the 'safety' of my own back yard.
The Tri Valley Times did an article about this story in today's (7/7/15) newspaper, it is the top story under the Local section.
DUBLIN -- Kim Taylor was sitting in her west Dublin home at dawn two weeks ago when she watched her neighbor's cat gingerly stroll along the fence line until something sent it into a frenzy.
"It darted right towards our neighbor's house, and then a coyote jumped lightning-fast from beyond our view," she said.
The coyote spent the next two hours stalking Taylor's fence line and her yard, while the bloody remains of the cat later were found nearby.

We have a few coyotes that roam the hills between houses in my neighborhood. We had a mountain lion kill a deer 10 houses up from us.
The Santa Cruz hills are like that.
While I have no problem with people defending their pets and, especially kids, it's kind of expected if you move into the country you get both the benefits and problems of living more rural. People lose their outdoor cats to predation all the time. Domestic cats are also wildlife killers too, and sometimes wildlife bites back.
(Edit: Sorry to hear about the loss of your pet. That sucks.)
My wife worked for a time for a Wildlife Rescue and Rehab organization. She would get calls monthly about someone wanting to "Remove/come take care of mice/raccoons/opossum" ... etc. She was a bit more forgiving when the caller was in the main city, but she was always floored by the people living out on the edges of town or even way up in the foothills of San Jose.
"You built your house over a big field, in the country. Yes, you likely have mice. No, our rehabilitation center is not an extermination service. No we will not remove a raccoon. The raccoon is doing what ... sitting on your fence ... I see. Eating your dog's dog food. I see. Is the dog food bowl outside. Yes. Ok. I see."
I'm not sure a child being killed by a coyote would be career ending for a politician. It very much depends on the city/area. Here in SC people are far more likely to ask the parents to take responsibility, or chalk it up to what it is, a tragic accident/event. Again, if you live rural, there are some things to be wary of and some different risks than living in a more urban area.
My kid isn't going to live in fear of going outside to play, but we will keep an eye on him, while he is still "bite-sized".
Edit: I think the fact that I can show my child a wild coyote is awesome. He got to see it one morning.
Here wild and dangerous animals live very close to humans. We should not tolerate this.
Where is "here"? What is your proposed solution? Kill all the coyotes nearby? You likely trade a few coyotes for an explosion in rat, mice, gopher, squirrel, opossum, raccoon/whatever small mammals are in the area.
Raccoons can be pretty dangerous too. Are they next on the list to kill?
If there is a population explosion for the coyotes, understood (edit: and that should be so super rare, due to them being pack/social predators). There could be some other factor here, the needs to be addressed, though. All the wildlife out here in my area, is super water stressed and just trying to make it to winter. Doesn't mean I want to offer them a meal of one of my family members, pet or otherwise, but I'm absolutely not for a culling of a population unless it is warranted by some other factor.
You will trade one problem for a new one, if we are talking a rural setting, with lots of wildlife already present.
That's funny, coyotes were on the opposite end of the menu for my dogs. When I was a kid we used to have an Irish Setter and a Rottweiler that used to lie in wait for coyotes to come snooping around the chickens and sheep we kept. Occasionally they would trap and kill one. The Rottie would drag it's corpse all over the place for a couple of days like a trophy haha.
Once, I looked out to the alfalfa field adjacent to my parents ranch and saw Max(the Rottweiler) surrounded by at least 6 coyotes. He was standing his ground but every time he turn around a coyote would try to take a nip at his back legs. I went into the house and grabbed my father's .243 and when I came back out, our dumb dog was still out there in the middle of the coyote circle. He might have been afraid to run and give his rear up to the coyotes, who knows. So I put the rifle up on a fence post and shot one of the coyotes, to which Max wasted no opportunity jumping on it and finishing it off. The rest ran off but didn't stay gone long, I'm pretty sure they were responsible for killing one of cats that went missing shortly after.
Clearly this cat-loving coyote is an IHL! Why else would it be covered in hair and enjoy eating p****y?
Silly.
Immense Hirsute Lesbians are huge, drooling, lapping, pussy eaters, leaving puddles of viscous saliva like enormous slugs.
Coyotes are just little pussy eating snappers. The resemblance is purely coincidental.
Coyotes are good for retroactive abortions if you have changed your mind about your kid.
"Go play with the nice puppy, Junior!"
My dear neighbors I have been very lucky to have been with an incredible lady named Dr. Elena E. Torello for the last 15 years. Almost three years ago we suffered a sad loss. Our 16 month old dog Cassi was eaten by coyotes over in the area around Land's End apartments and Mossel Rock. We had hiked in the area for 9 years and our dogs had routinely run free without problems. We were traumatized. We contacted the Daly City Police, the mayor of Daly City and many other agencies with jurisdiction over the area. We got a lot of kind words and assurances that the matter was "being looked into" but no concrete action. I noted that a coyote had menaced a child at the same time in Daly City. I bluntly warned the mayor that if a coyote seriously injured or killed a child, it would be "a career-ending event."
It is sad when dogs, cats and raccoons are killed. It would be tragic if a small child were severely injured or killed. This is where this is all heading. The coyotes are getting bolder and bolder. Public officials all over the world are apathetic and do not act until they are forced to. A tragedy with a child will force them to act.
As a matter of interest, I spent 6 years of my life in South Africa. The country is full of dangerous animals like lions, leopards, crocodiles, hippos, black mamba snakes, hyenas, elephants etc. The only wild animal that comes around a populated area is baboons in Cape Town. If some dangerous animal is sighted close to a populated area, it is a big news item in the newspapers and on the 6:00 O'Clock news all over the country. Here wild and dangerous animals live very close to humans. We should not tolerate this.
One defensive measure that all of you can take to protect your pets is to buy spiked collars and put them on your beloved animals. When a coyote attacks a victim, it breaks their neck. The spiked collar will stop this and give your beloved pet a chance to get away. Pet stores are now selling pepper spray to ward off coyotes. If you have a gun and plan to shoot one, please be careful that you do not endanger people with a bullet. I use a sling shot with heavy balls as my coyote weapon. Elena plans to start using a bow and arrow.
