A jury has ruled against a New York woman who sued her nephew for hugging her too hard on his eighth birthday. In a case that suddenly burst on the national news scene, Jennifer Connell claimed the boy acted unreasonably when he leaped into her arms and caused her to fall on the ground and break her wrist four years ago. But a six-member Superior Court jury found that the boy, Sean Tarala of Westport, was not liable for his actions. Connell showed no emotion as the verdict was announced but later pleaded with judicial marshals to escort her to...

You should be able to sue children for not being your complaisant, genetic pride and joys. After all, they are here to gobsmack our narcissism.

The aunt should be grateful the kid didn't jump on her face and start dry humping.

Secondary gain through a corrupting legal system should always trump blood ties.

Obviously more to the story than we're hearing here.
Like perhaps the other sibling is loaded, and/or inherited mom and dad's money and left her out, so she had an axe to grind with that person and not the nephew.
Or the sibling is on it, and they are both trying to get the home owner insurance policy to pay for the accident.
Otherwise the whole story falls apart. Why would a kid be so happy to see such a spiteful bitch?

Yes. I happened to see the story reported on various "news" sites, in fact hundreds (maybe thousands) ran with it, and the only place I saw with sensible comments was on Jezebel.com, where an insurance company employee explained what probably happened. The plaintiff is an office worker, and the wrist injury interfered with her ability to write, type, and do other daily tasks. Her medical insurance didn't nearly cover all the expenses that she incurred, and the kid's parents' homeowner's insurance wouldn't pay anything unless she sued the kid. So, she sued. Then, media got a hold of a "frivolous lawsuit" story, quoted her out of context about holding a plate, and turned it into a clickbait headline, monetizing millions of clicks and comments. It's amazing how angry people are, and how easily (and eagerly) manipulated they can be. She was obvously injured, with a broken wrist; she had paid for insurance, the homeowner had paid for insurance, but both insurance companies refused to pay without a lawsuit (and now the homeowner's insurance won't pay at all). Some people like to believe that Americans are the worst, that aunts run around suing children, but in fact these are merely human beings trapped in an awful system, like The Matrix or The Terminator or any of the other sci-fi movies where human inventions turn against people. Those movies are the collective nightmares of a culture, watching as the institutions consume the people that built them. "Thanks, Obamacare!"

A four-year lawsuit against your 8-year-old nephew for excitedly hugging you? That's the most fucked up thing I saw this decade and I attended every one of CIC's family get-togethers.
