Cops are at best a necessary evil and at worse just plain evil. Honest, law-abiding cops that actually serve the people, should get the median wage in the community they serve supported by tax payer dollars. Criminal cops should go directly to jail, should not pass go, and should not collect a year and a half of salary at the tax payer's expense. They also forfeit their pension.

The real problem I have is the cost especially in Calif where it is quite common for them to be retired on a pension well over 100k

Everyone agrees with the fact that we have a problem with the quality of police in this country and corruption among cops. Cops have a job in which they are called upon to interact with and sometimes pursue and hopefully prevent some of the worst things humans are doing out there. They see the worst behavior and the outcomes of the very worst behavior among humans.

And they are called upon to step in to the middle of these situations and to make split second decisions of whether to kill or not when dealing with a possibly armed criminal (which they mange to fuck up way too often).

WE need better training and quality control for cops.

The argument that a few bad cops don't represent the police as a whole is as ridiculous as the argument that a few bad jihadist don't represent Arabic Muslims as a whole. When vast numbers of people either engage in, cover up, or condone criminal acts of violence, the group can and should be condemned and the individuals responsible for those crimes should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
