Sorry to any Stockton, Nash, or Nowitzki fans ...

For one, Bird was slow footed but yet, using crafty positioning, averaged nearly 2 steals per game.

Sure, we're all aware of his outside shooting, but how was he able to make all those passes, barely looking?

What's happened is that America, sorry, make that white America, is looking for the 2nd coming of Larry Bird, so that b-ball can again, become the sport of a Bob Cousy, Pete Maravich, John Havlicek, etc. Unfortunately, those days ended with my early childhood.

Larry Bird will forever be the last great white player.

Color aside there's argument he was the greatest player of all time. Hard to top the greatest ever.

If his foot speed were a bit faster than yes, he'd be the greatest of all time because he'd be both a top tier one-on-one defender (ala Pippen, Cooper, Moncrief, or perhaps Rodman) as well as a quasi-zone one. As it stands, his ability to generate defense was based upon mismatches as well as keen anticipation. If he had that extra lift of athleticism then yes, he's the greatest of all time bar none. Remember, he also averaged 10 boards per game and supposedly, he couldn't jump.

Thanks to that defect, the nod goes more towards Jordan, Olajuwon, Russell, or Chamberlain.

Actually my favorite Larry Bird highlight his reaction starting at 1:42:30 of this video. Nerves. Of. Steel.

Very simple ... I can bang hoes, watch classic sports Celtics games, and drink some whiskey.

Any questions?

Let me add to that ... I can also re-take the MCAT, score above a 35, beating 2/3 of the undergrads at Harvard College.

Then, using the ploy of being a financier type, get accepted into a top 25 US medical school, which could include Hopkins, Mayo, Columbia/NY-Presbyterian, Penn, Harvard, etc.

Then later, attend the Univ of London Masters of Law LLM, at either UCL or LSE, and get a first class honours, beating the average Ivy Leaguer like the senior partner who'd gotten 2nd class honours (2:1 upper or 2:2 lower) despite being dean's list at Penn/Columbia, or perhaps, attend the Univ of Cambridge and do the same thing.

You get the point, I'm a Renaissance man.

I guess if you want to be a 'proper but Improper Bostonian' then yes.

Whites are going to dominate Soccer then followed by inner city Blacks, then Latin Americans. While Lithuanians will go on to dominate Basketball.
It's just the natural order of things. We've already gotten rid of the old guard in the FIFA, so that we can pull in the Everyone get's a trophy crowd.
Get ready for mediocre Marinos.

In all honesty, if Bird were a more athletic player ... the history of the NBA would be a lot different. In effect, he would have eliminated the defenses of a Michael Cooper, one of the best one-to-one perimeter defenders, James Worthy's drives, one of the areas where the other Celts had a hard time beating esp with Kareem opening up the lanes, and thus, the C's may have won two more titles, like '82 and '85, and possibly, if the stars aligned, one more in '87.

The fact that Bird was a slow footed white guy, who could barely jump, limited the 80s Celtics to only 3 titles. As a more athletic version of himself, it may have been double that.

Seriously, not one other b-ball player had his court vision nor instincts for the game. I'd say that an athletic Bird would have given someone like Olajuwon, an amazingly gifted athlete (ala spin moves/top shot blocker/etc), a run for his money.

But the point is NO ONE CARES. If I wanted the same degree of excitement that a soccer game generates, I'd watch grass grow. Oops, my bad, watching grass is MORE exciting.
