Tinder hands woman scholarship after she was 'kicked out' of her sorority due to 'promiscuous' picture

Tinder, the dating app company, is handing Shannon Workman a full year's scholarship to pay for her study at the University of Nebraska after she was allegedly thrown from her sorority because of her profile picture on the app.

She was formerly a member of the Chi Omega sorority, and was told her Tinder photo violated the sorority's "Human Dignity” rule.

In the photo, the student is wearing a shirt with the Chi Omega letters and text: "Sweet Home Chi Omega.”

Because of this, the sorority began a "membership revocation” process, which Workman declined to participate in. She told them: "I'm never coming back".

"My daughter was kicked out of her sorority for this picture that was posted on Tinder,” her mother, Jill Workman, posted on Facebook.

"It was posted on her account for 8 months and now all of a sudden it's not acceptable. It was described as promiscuous and risqué and [she] was accused of using it for hook ups. ANYONE that knows my daughter even a little bit knows that this is not the case.”

She added: "There's no way she could read that rule and see it apply to Tinder. It's not different from Facebook or any other site.”

Tinder co-founder and CEO Sean Rad told BuzzFeed News: "It's easy to give in and give up,

"We think what Shannon did sends a very empowering message to young women and college students, which is actually one of Tinder's largest audiences. Don't conform, don't let people tell you your beliefs are wrong just because it's not the same as their beliefs.”

The app is also offering the student a paid internship.

Rad told BuzzFeed: "It's the first time we reached out to someone whose story inspired us and asked them to be part of the team,

"Her actions showed a depth of leadership and courage that is admirable and something we value as part of our company culture. We always want to stand up for our users who stand up for us.”

Rad told the website he personally called Workman about the offer. He said she was "incredibly kind and thoughtful and a little surprised to hear from us.”

Workman was pleased about the support. She told BuzzFeed: "I think it's absolutely amazing,

"I do stand up for Tinder because I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Some people use it for hookups but I don't, and a lot of great things happen through Tinder.”
