American South is Evil

An old post that deserves its own thread since conservatives keep trying to rewrite history.

Notice that they are all the same damn map!

The American South and Midwest have been people, not entirely but overwhelmingly, with despicable, racist, and downright evil people since before the country was founded. They have established a culture of racism and bigotry and have been on the bigoted side of every civil rights issue in this nation's history. They are still fighting the Civil War which is why they love to wave, not the Confederate Flag, but the flag of the Confederate Navy and the Confederate Battle Flag which was made into a symbol by the KKK to show they were still fighting for slavery.

When these people stop acting like bigots, renounce their racist and backwards culture, and join the rest of us in the 21st century, I'll stop calling them bigots. Until then, they are bigots and none of us should let their opinions and horrible values determine the course of our nation.

The history of African slavery pre-dates the founding of the USA.

"The Portuguese were the first to engage in the New World slave trade in the 16th century. Between 1418 and the 1470s, the Portuguese launched a series of exploratory expeditions that remapped the oceans south of Portugal, charting new territories that one explorer described as "oceans where none have ever sailed before."[4] In 1526, the Portuguese completed the first transatlantic slave voyage from Africa to the Americas, and other countries soon followed.[5]"

The history of genocide pre-dates the Holocaust and that fact mitigates the evil of the Holocaust and responsibility of the Nazis every bit as much as your statement mitigates the evil of American slavery and the responsibilities of the slavers. I.e. not at all.

There is one difference between Germans today and the American Southerners today. Modern Germans do not repeat the evil of their ancestors. They don't glorify the Nazis. They don't revise history. It's actually illegal to be a Holocaust denier in Germany. I don't agree with that, but it does demonstrate that today's German have completely broken with their past generation's political agendas and culture.

In contrast today's American Southerns still glorify their slave-owning ancestors, downplay the horrors of slavery, lie about the cause of the American Civil War, and continue to, as much as our society will tolerate, economically and politically oppress and kill minorities through police killings, voter ID laws intended to target legal minority voters, zoning polices, etc.

When the current generation condones, supports, and even advocates as much as possible the sins of past generations, they are still accountable for those sins. I'll stop calling the American South evil when it stops doing evil and admits the evil of its past.

Apples and oranges.

Apples and oranges.

Apples and oranges are both fruits. One can make quite a few useful comparisons regarding them including
1. Calories
2. Vitamins
3. Degree of freshness
4. Costs
5. Proper environmental conditions for growth
6. Profitability in farming

There are no two identical events in history. If comparing two events that aren't perfectly identical wasn't valid, then you could make no valid historical comparison and there would be no lessons to learn from history and no purpose in recording history. The inescapable logical conclusion of your premise is ridiculous. Therefore, your premise is ridiculous.

To whitewash the evils of the American South is no different and no less a disservice to future generations than to whitewash the evils of the Nazis or the evils of ISIS.

Feel free to provide a compelling counter-argument. Mere contradiction carries no weight.

You are grasping at straws. Slavery was an established practice before the South was the South. Slave labor was a economic boon to the owners of the means of production.

You are applying a bogus sledgehammer analysis to why Southerners are proud of their history and ancestors. Many Americans are justifiably proud of their history, but only a narrow-minded bigot would say that is due to slaughtering Indians and stealing their land.

6   HEY YOU   2016 Jul 30, 12:53pm

You are all slaves!

George Carlin:
" You have OWNERS! They OWN YOU. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They’ve long since bought, and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies, so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They got you by the balls."

As I said, mere contradiction carries no weight. I am in no way "grasping at straws" as the entire history of the American South is irrevocably interwoven with slavery. The American Southern culture was based on slavery. The post-Civil-War Southern culture and politics was based entirely on mistreating, abusing, and oppressing freed slaves and their descendants up to and including today. Yes, we northerners have been dragging southerners asses kicking and screaming into the 21st century, but we ain't done dragging their asses into the present.

Meanwhile, people including you continue to downplay the horrific atrocities that occurred throughout the history of the American South both before and after the Civil War. The abuse of human beings by the American South is downright a crime against humanity. To say otherwise is completely disingenuous. Are you denying that this abuse was a crime against humanity?

Of course slavery is a horror. But to claim that is the reason why Southerners are proud of their ancestry is just bigotry.

But to claim that is the reason why Southerners are proud of their ancestry is just bigotry.

I did not claim Southerners are proud of their ancestry because of slavery. I claimed that Southerners glorify their slaver ancestors and continue the abuses that their ancestors committed after the Civil War. Don't straw man argument me.

And bigotry is the defining aspect of the American South's culture. It permeates every generation, every Confederate KKK Battle Flag flown, ever voter ID law, every use of the word thug. As the Rachel Maddow video shows bigotry still drives the Southern base of the Republican Party.

To deny that the culture and history of American South is evil and continues to harm America to this day is as ridiculous and idiotic as to deny that Middle Eastern Islamic culture is evil and does great harm.

The American South will never get respect or deserve any until it breaks with its past the way that Germany broke with its Nazi past. And as the Donald Trump candidacy unequivocally demonstrates that ain't happening right now.
