"Recent police responses to protesters in Baton Rouge and other US cities violate international human rights law, the representative says.

Amid renewed nationwide protests over police killings of black men, a representative from the United Nations toured the United States with a peculiar goal: to assess whether the exercise of freedom of assembly and association in the country conforms to international human rights law.

UN special reporter Maina Kiai concluded a 17-day tour on Tuesday, during which he met with protesters, law enforcement, and government officials in 10 cities—including Baton Rogue, Louisiana; Ferguson, Missouri; Baltimore; and New York City—and observed protests at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland and the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, as well as Black Lives Matter protests in other cities. A full UN report on Kiai's visit is due in June 2017, but Kiai posted his preliminary findings on his Facebook page on Wednesday. Many of them weren't pretty:

US police officers understand appropriate crowd management and de-escalation techniques, but chose not to use them, Kiai said. Black protesters face more aggressive responses from police than other groups, experience "more intimidation and more disrespect," and are detained longer and face more serious charges when arrested. Such treatment can discourage people from participating in protests—an illegal curtailment of their right to do so, Kiai said. He also compared the Baton Rouge Police Department's aggressive response earlier this month to protesters of Alton Sterling's death to the "mismanagement of protests" seen in Ferguson and Baltimore and noted that the Cleveland Police Department contributed to "escalation" during protests at the GOP convention last week...."

The so-called “War on Drugs” is a perfect example. From it, one out of every 15 black men is in currently jai

If you want to help them and if this is your position, then advocate for legalizing drugs, no problem here. But the premise that today's cops treat selectively by race is bullshit and has been debunked many times. Many cops are minorities themselves or have at least a minority background. They are naturally more afraid operating in hoods with higher crime rates, but that's it.

That's because, as a percentage of the population, blacks break more laws and ignore the law more than any other group. It's pretty simple.

Pretty simple minded.

Black child shot in city park 2-4 seconds after law enforcement arrives at scene.
White cops have shot/killed how many unarmed black men?

These people just want to get home or to work during their daily hustle and are being held up by these idiot protesters. They are trying to lead productive lives, caring for their family, children and loved ones. If you arrive late to preschool your surcharge can easily be $50 for keeping the staff there late. What about their rights to lead a live free from being harassed by idiots blocking the road?

4   theoakman   2016 Aug 18, 9:23am

These people have no right to block a highway and god forbid a fire truck or ambulance needs to use the roadways in an emergency. They should be arrested for doing so.

These people are idiots.

Three words.

Stop and frisk.

That's a tough one. I'd argue again that the selection comes naturally rather than targeted, it's simply a result of the areas where stop and frisk was implemented in. When and where it was abolished after the ACLU scored a win, black on black crime and homicide spiraled out of control. So you could argue that abolishing stop and frisk harmed lawful people of color. It's sometimes necessary, though I prefer to police to have to have a reason for stopping you.

Proof?

Here is some that refutes what you say.

Ending New York’s Stop-and-Frisk Did Not Increase Crime.

http://abc7chicago.com/news/cpd-stop-and-frisks-down-80-percent-in-2016/1182604/

New York does not have the problems Chicago has. Also violent crime has increased in NY in recent years, the data is cherry-picked, one could argue the crime started increasing slowly as the program was completely phased out slowly. Again, I'm not a huge fan of it, and it may have been invented with some good will and/or some bad authoritarian reasoning, but certainly not for racism.

Cops murder citizens

"Oh no big deal, their skin is dark so they are criminals "

Citizens protest The State murdering the citizenry

" Put those idiots in jail! All the poor people driving alone in their car with no purpose whatsoever are just trying to enjoy the Freedom! To sit idly by and do nothing!"

This country is toast

The majority of them are trying to get to work in time or to their family, disrupting traffic, esp. in the bay area with it's many bottlenecks and bridges is brutal for working class people trying to make it in time. Go pick a fight with the cops if you want, but leave hard working people alone.

Small bias in handling, small opposite (!) bias in shootings. You're telling me that's widespread racism? Sure this has to be repeated in other areas, but at least it's a data point, not just made up shit.

11   anonymous   2016 Aug 18, 10:34am

You need a data point, to prove that people are racist? That cops harass the fuck out of people with darker skin? Is this a joke?

Hard working people lmao. Sorry you cannot afford to be inconvenienced for a few extra minutes while sitting in traffic. Some of us don't like big government. Yuuuuge government. Government so big that they can take your life away without reason or response.

But some of you claim to not like big gov, yet nary a peep about government murdering citizens, so long as their black, right?

Doctors and nurses trying to get to hospitals to save lives. Yeah, these are the people you need to stop from getting to work.

Five years for each protester blocking traffic and endangering lives.
