I found their comment form and submitted a polite comment. Maybe it will do some tiny bit of good, but most likely not. At least it made me feel better.

I really wish I had some alternative to NPR, especially my local station KQED, because every time I turn on the radio, it is only a matter of seconds before they go into identity politics.

Nearly every article on NPR divides us.

This morning as I woke up they talked about "whites moving into the center of San Francisco, and poverty moving out to the suburbs". As if most whites could afford San Francisco.

Then there was an article about a Vietnamese grocer in a black neighborhood. The guy was smart and talked about diversity and hiring local blacks and carrying produce. He knows what they want him to say. Good kumbaya Asians getting along with blacks was the story, and he knew it. But that's not why he started a store.

Then there was an article about yet another special program for women's health (and women alone, in case that wasn't obvious). Never a story about men's health on NPR, though men have consistently worse health.

Anyone see a theme?

Yes--poor Patrick. Born white. Boo hoo.

3   joeyjojojunior   2016 Nov 22, 8:15am

guiltless, but very oppressed.

They won't ever do a story about white people on NPR anymore!!

Don't worry--Donald will make America great again. Including more stories about white men.

4   Patrick   2016 Nov 22, 8:23am

NPR certainly does not fairly represent the majority of Americans.

men's health is an afterthought in medical school and as far as I know, I'm one of the few among my classmates that actually thinks it's an issue.

mostly the realm of urologists who are surgeons, first and foremost. Seems obvious, but not all men's health issues are surgical in nature.

And to think, the Republicans were all for talking about no race. All just citizens. Yet Trump is all white, all about white. You can't see the hypocrisy, Patrick?

7   ddshutlz   2016 Nov 22, 8:45am

So if you want more stories about white dudes, why not visit a site that has that? For example, if I'm looking for news on the daily troubles of white Americans, I just go to Fox. It seems you really dislike NPR, why not give it up for something better?

Patrick, I'm not trying to tell you what, specifically, to do, and am glad you took the initiative to be proactive and voice your concerns to NPR, but - IMO - you'd be remiss not to mention that 60% or more of NPR's funding comes from corporations and legacy trusts, and that their editors and reporters live in a bubble, insulated from the real concerns of the majority of Americans, and that their executive staff is grossly overpaid.

When I listen to NPR, it's typically a subject matter they're discussing that deals with the Beltway, Silicon Valley, globalism, etc., and it becomes very apparent that they've lost touch with everyday Americans.

They're truly an elitist network, and should do a mashup with The Economist & Wired.

9   ddshutlz   2016 Nov 22, 8:49am

What about the fact that most urologist are dudes? Do you feel women are under represented there? Why not also make that your issue?MMR says

Hey, I post on Breitbart. There are white supremacists running wild over there. I can see Patrick would try to make his opinion heard. We still have free speech. Not so sure in 4 years.

If I listened to NPR I would probably sink into depression. Most news now days is bleak, adds posing as news, blatant propaganda, or intentionally divisive rhetoric. There's still a lot of good in America. Most people do get along, and don't think ethnicity is important. They work hard, love their families, try to make their world a better place. We need a news outlet dedicated to telling their stories.

True, but people don't read good news as much. :) So far, in Las Vegas, people are actually more friendly now than before Trump got elected. We hope it stays that way.

Yes, this!

I don't like Fox or Breitbart either because they clearly have their own massive biases. They are better in some ways, but like NPR, they also do not seem unifying or objective or intellectually honest.

I want news which does not constantly play to divisive topics.

Hey Patrick what do you think about 94.1 KPFA here its 90.7 its KPFK Pacifica Radio in LA I turn to that Liberal station every now and then to get a different point of view, late at night I hear about a dozen fbombs and mentally deranged liberal millennials but durring the day its just normal liberal crazies. Seems like all of the "public" radio stations have been pulled left a bit but NPRs slant doesn't bother me that much its much better than anything else. We have KPCC 89.3, KPBS 89.5, and KCRW 89.9 all of which are ok most of the time.

Quite a few times I felt that I have gotten short shrift in healthcare settings because I'm a man. I guess I do not complain loudly enough about whatever ails me. Or have too high tolerance for pain and discomfort. Whatever it is.

Which makes me want to ask you the question: How much different is the whining volume between the average female patient and the average male patient, for similar ailments?

The problem is that your listening to west coast NPR, which is ran by unwashed and hairy hippies. Listen to east coast NPR. It's run by intellectual elitists. Tune out the local stuff, and listen to the national programs like the Diane Rehm Show and All Things Considered.

Those of us who are 25 to 55 and white males feel as if we're treated as afterthoughts by society. It's almost as we are burnished with some sort of original sin.

I'm 36. I never have been racist, never killed anyone in a war, never usurped someone's rights or property, never tried to infringe on anyone's civil rights, and literally never have done nothing that is associated with white privilege, and in fact, can prove that I've been discriminated against in the workplace as a substantially less-qualified woman was promoted in lieu of me (2 years ago; I have a better degree, with better grades, from a superior university, along with 2x the tenure at the company, and better workplace evaluations).

White males are the new oppressed class in Amerika.

Playing the victim doesn't work.

My dad told me growing up that you had to work twice as hard as everyone else to get ahead. It applies now same as always. I'm only a few years older than you...I'm 44. I had concerns that millenials would blow me away. Those concerns were unfounded. Some have potential, but it's an absolute joke that a millennial will replace me. At twice their age I work twice as hard, know 10x as much, and have zero quit in me. I made myself valuable by doing the garbage work here no one else wants to do. No one is getting promoted ahead of me, race or gender irrelevant.

My experience as a cab driver: Men are more likely to barf, but more likely to ask you to stop and do it out the window or door.
Women are less likely to barf, but do so without warning explosively over the back seat, and you have to pull over and spend an hour cleaning it up, usually missing the bar closing jackpot time.

I not only bullshit for work, but in between all that bullshit, I bullshit for fun here at Patnet. My unofficial title is King Schmooze, and that's why I can work anywhere I want and get big raises each year. We get 20-something interns and they burn out in no time.

White Males are expected to be competent.

Again, we need a male strike for a day and watch the fireworks when there are no plumbers, electricians, firefighters, or anywhere near enough cops, trashmen, etc. to keep things running.

What a hoot it would be to watch Social Workers and Non-Profit Admin Females struggle with basic infrastructure.

Tell that to the Duke lacrosse team or any of the other thousands of men falsely accused of rape and convicted due to prejudice against men, or to the tens of thousands of men falsely accused of domestic violence so that the woman can get more of their shared wealth and alimony in a divorce, or to the student who didn't get into a college or program because of minority quotas and racial preferences.

All people and groups are discriminated against including white men. If you can't acknowledge this, then you are the bigot.

Ah, a clone of me! Full disclosure: I'm only half Irish. My mom's dad was a Russian Jew, and my mom's mother was Polish, but converted to Judaism for the marriage. Technically I'm Jewish because of that but didn't know it growing up. Was told that grandpa was "Russian". My mother converted in the other direction, to Catholicism.

True about the talking, on both sides. My Irish relatives in particular can just talk forever, no particular topic or audience needed.

That's when you make the big bucks, when somebody sloshed wants to go from a club in Allston to their house in Quincy... So I started putting a sheet down, and I sold it to passengers as "Guaranteeing their cleanliness, I change the sheets every shift." Really it was there so if they barfed, I'd toss it in the trunk and get a new one.

Oh yeah, it's a yakking on both sides on my Fam also.

My mother is also a Catholic, and a false convert to Judaism, she buried the Saint Joseph Statue to sell her house, and loves Mother Angelica. hahahaha
The funny thing is that her father, my Granddad, was a German Protestant who converted to Catholicism b/c of Jan Pavel II.

My little (I say that knowing she's like 35 now) adopted Korean cousin went to school on Saint Patrick's day, and they were like "Siobhan, you're Asian, aren't you?"
"No, I'm IRISH!!"
