Even if there's some truth to the narrative, they need to rise above it. Denying that it's true is probably one strategy. Another would be, "maybe I have to work a little harder or be even better, by trying harder, being more disciplined etc, but I will not deny my potential." I think the latter strategy is more likely to lead to success, becasue evidence and facts suggest that there is bias out there.

In sports this works well, because sports is a very pure meritocracy..

I'll be the first to admit that welfare programs were a cop out and a failure. And yes it was democrats that pushed for this, although politics is a convoluted game, and it's hard to know entirely what the interests were behind our fucked up welfare culture.

But why was welfare considered necessary ? It had nothing to do with what was going on in the black middle class. It was that blacks were often the last in line for the good low skilled jobs such as in factories (which where sometimes good middle class jobs back then). Without decent jobs, what were they going to do ?

But on the other hand, I would agree that welfare totally screwed blacks over. And there are too many people motivated to have children and live on welfare now. I would be the first to agree with that. It's a huge problem/question. What do we do if and when some sort of base income becomes necessary ? Do we institute laws as to who can have children? Forcing people to meet certain requirements to have kids ? IF the government is going to pay a higher base income to those with children, then there probably needs to be some requirements, relative to age, education, and work. Not sure if Americans will ever agree to this kind of thing. IT's complicated by the fact that in the early years, staying at home with the baby is a job.

There might not be an easy answer to this. Maybe the answer is somehow having more jobs that don't directly contribute to someones bottom line, but do contribute to the betterment of the community. I know, that sounds too commie ? Especially to those that don't fully understand all the ramifications of the question.

Marcus, I agree with your earlier post regarding racism and how it effects our personal perceptions of people of color. But I also think the African American community has to take personal responsibility and stop lashing out at white people. I am a light skinned Hispanic and my husband is a mix of English, German, Jewish, Hungarian, and Peruvian ancestry. But he looks like an all white male. My children also look white. Since I have moved to Oakland my view of blacks has changed dramatically despite growing up in west Fresno. I have witnessed intense hatred towards my daughter from black girls, women and even a school director. I walked in on the high school director yelling at my daughter completely worked up displaying aggressive behavior over something another student told him. (long story short: a boy likes my daughter, a black girl likes that boy who doesn't like her). That same girl was able to say whatever she wanted about Jordan and get her into trouble with this man. This same black girl actually pulled a gun on my daughter pointing it at her face. My daughter Jordan didn't report the incident for fear that worse would happen to her. The school director did absolutely nothing about the incident and denied anything took place since no witnesses would come forward. Jordan's high school counselor is a black women and also displays similar hostile traits. The minute my daughter stands up for herself against a black person they literally go berserk. It's as if they feel that white people owe them and how dare they talk to me that way. My other daughter who attended a different school had a black teacher (who was half white herself) spend classroom time whining about how her black father had to work so hard to support his family.
Now let me tell you, she is complaining to a classroom of kids who come from different parts of the world who have really seen poverty. My daughter took note that this teacher would grade the white and Asian kids especially hard.

My grandfather worked the fields his whole life and I never heard him complain. Nor did he have hate for the white man. He was a trusted employee, a Forman, and worked literally the day he died. I think everyone needs to be held to the same standard. Whites, blacks and Mexicans, Asians, everybody. And everybody should be given a chance to prove themselves. But I don't think blacks should have a right to lash out at anyone who they perceive as privileged or white because they are benefiting from this society. They need to take some personal responsibility and make necessary changes.

I'm always impressed by the attitude and accomplishments of Caribbean and African blacks in America. Used to chat with a Haitian janitor woman in Boston the year I lived there, and she was very proud of how well her kids were doing in America. She had two in medical school. They seemed to be doing just fine in spite of "racism".

And it seems like every single black African I meet in the US is happy to be here, no hate for anyone.

I totally agree with you, and that story was surprising to me. One thing I wondered about it was whether part of the issue was simply personality and culture, that its the perceived aggressiveness or hostility. Having experienced different schools as a teacher and student teacher I'll share an observation. Adults yelling at students in a school that has a high black poulation is not unusual at all, where as yelling at white, asian, or especially latino kids is considered very rude and inappropriate. That is, as a cultural difference, black kids respond to (and respect) that kind of intensity, where it would be considered over the top and rude especially with Latino kids. You have probably seen videos of a classroom situation with a male teacher diffusing a fight situation by getting in their face (of mae black students)very intensely.

Is it possible that was what you were seeing in that situation? That is more a cultural difference or habit as to how that lady interacts with all children, rather than a black versus white thing? Obviously I wasn't there, and I'm not saying that was the case. Just posing the question as a possibility. Otherwise it's surprising, becasue in schools, most people are going to make a conscious effort to treat students the same. AS for the bit about grading some students easier, that's really sad if it happens, and also would be surprising. A black teacher essentially holding white kids to a higher standard ? Bizarre if true.
