As reported in the linked article, it was his entire essay in response to the question, “What matters to you, and why?” In the article, he goes on to say that "one-fourth to one-third of the Muslim community in America are black," which is why black lives matter to him: in America, black lives are disproportinately likely to be Muslim lives. Otherwise, the "activism" that he called an "asset" appears to be mainly on behalf of Islam.

I wonder if Stanford might be angling for some of the publicity and millions of Petrodollars that can flow from signaling devotion to Islam. The story of one student's Tweet seems to have hit commercial media worldwide with almost simultaneous full length articles, suggesting a possibly coordinated PR campaign with checks attached. Someone appears to be investing in exposure. Ziad's bio is very impressive for an 18yo, including four articles for the Huffington Post, one of which featured on "the front page;" all four are along the lines of, "It is not easy to be American-Muslim...." He's met President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton, dined at the White House, been awarded prizes for his activism, gained admission to Stanford: whether "easy" or not, it looks much better than being a non-Muslim in Bangladesh. I do wish that he'd persuade Bangladeshis and Pakistanis to agree with the tolerance that he claims to believe in, rather than trying to spread the hateful fraud of Islam here.

You'd have to ask the admissions departments there. This particular article was about Stanford. His main activism and all his HuffPo articles are about being a teenage Muslim Bangladeshi American (the sequence varies) and how that is "not easy," you know, what with dining at the White House and meeting the President and separately meeting the Secretary of State and now having to choose a college major. Life is tough these days, I tell you. Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, Muslims are murdering non-Muslims with impunity, as per Islam. Somehow he doesn't have time to mention that, you know with all the Ted talking and collecting prizes and whatnot.

Regardless of his credentials, I would say writing that on your college essay should automatically disqualify you from attending because you clearly aren't taking the application seriously. There are two possibilities here that I can see. Stanford either doesn't care what you write or they don't actually read the essays. Just knowing people in general, I'm going with the latter.

I agree with this. It's a gimmick that is somewhat clever because black lives matter is both a thing and a reason for being important. It's plaigerism to claim that part though. The only thing original is repeating it 100 times. That a terrible go at an essay.
