Hi guys,

No matter the topic I always seem to get great insight and recommendations from Patnet.

I'm planning a camping trip for late August/early Sept and would like to ask for any recommendations on location.

I know there are some great campgrounds here in NorCal, some totally hidden and difficult to find without word of mouth. Im looking for something that isn't too far, 2-3hrs of SF, preferably with water (lake/river) nearby.

Over the last few years we've gone up to the Russian River and always enjoyed it.

Believe it or not I've also camped in the Oakland Hills and in Half Moon Bay which were both surprisingly good and right around the corner from SF.

Does anyone have any recommendations close to the Bay Area?

Thanks guys!

Pinnacles is a great place, but gets very hot in the summer:

Yes, best camping I've done recently was in big Sur at a private campground called "Ventana." It has a shady campground for tents only in a valley nestled under many redwoods. Bathrooms were good, with showers, people friendly and considerate. There's RV camping up the hill in a different area. You can have a fire, and the staff sells firewood at the booth. Close to the purple sand beach (Pfieffer) and there's a country store and restaurant a mile or so North, that while crunchy, is nice and has good coffee and doughnuts.

Farther out, and hard to reserve but a very nice one: D. L. Bliss State Park, Tahoe.

The Sierra has much better camping than anything near SF.

This is way out-NE CA border with oregon, but nice and no lake/ocean. Beautiful and tons of huge caves-no lights for most-so take some flashlights.

Much closer -Salt point state park-rugged sonoma coast, isolated, beautiful strong waves, but close enough to restaurants and supplies and hotels if you need a day off from camping. Reaaly nice rock formations and even on weekend barely 10-15 people in the park. Also spectacular drive to get there.

Thanks guys, I'll check those out.

If anyone has any others, it would be much appreciated. Thanks

I think I may book in Big Basin Redwood State Park:

Closed until October due to highway-1 slides, bummer
