Think I'm nuts? It's the official platform of SPD:

The SPD leaders, whose party is lagging Merkel’s Christian Democrats in the polls by 15 percentage points, said Germany would have to nearly double current defense spending from 37 billion euros to meet the NATO target. That would make it the largest military power in Europe - a goal they said “no one could want” given Germany’s Nazi history.

Instead, they said, Germany should focus on building a strong European defense union and, ultimately, a European army - a stance that may resonate with a deeply pacifist German public that remains skeptical of military engagements.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-election-military-spd/germanys-spd-rejects-nato-2-percent-defense-spending-target-idUSKBN1AM001
Keep in mind, they laughed at Churchill, proudly declaring he was a warmongering eccentric, if not downright delusional, literally right up until the Sudentenland. And all the Liberals of the day claimed "Peace in Our Time."

We really should be thinking about how to divide Germany into Saxony, Prussia, Bavaria, Hannover, etc.and if Morganthau was right all along.

There are so few if any women that can lead well at the top levels of a company or country. I'll never vote for a woman POTUS. Merkel is proof of the that. I'm not big into German politics, but I've heard enough in passing that the German economy is going in the shitter.

You cannot blame Merkel for that. The blame goes to Biden and Nuland for blowing up
Nord Stream 2 - the Russian pipeline that supplied cheap gas to Germany and Europe.

Partially. German govt have been spineless EU and US bootlickers for decades now. Time to send them packing and replacing them with a Germany First government.

For some reason, the thought of a powerful, nationalist Germany scares other countries in Europe.

Yesterday, a Saudi-born man named Taleb al-Abdulmohsen rented a black BMW sport utility vehicle and drove it into a crowd at the Christmas market in Magdeburg, killing five people and injuring more than 200. It is the second such attack in German history, following the 2016 Berlin truck attack by the unsuccessful Tunisian asylum seeker Anis Amri, exactly eight years and one day prior.

The assault was captured on surveillance video...

German police arrested al-Abdulmohsen almost immediately, near his smashed-up SUV. In this image the police have him at gunpoint and he lies face-down on the ground...

Al-Abdulmohsen is a 50 year-old psychiatrist and psychotherapist who lived in Bernburg, 46km south of Magdeburg. He first came to Germany from Saudi Arabia in March 2006, when he was granted political asylum. German authorities repeatedly refused Saudi Arabian requests that he be extradited. The Saudis accused him of terrorism and human trafficking, for alleged complicity with efforts to smuggle Arab girls to the European Union. Al-Abdulmohsen finally obtained refugee status and permanent residence in Germany in July 2016, and for years he has worked at a government clinic in Bernburg, where he has treated patients for problems with addiction.

Can you imagine if those Chinese factories in Mexico were allowed to flood our market with Chinese EVs?

That was Biden’s long term plan and the main reason for the 2035 mandate.

Nobody in Germany wants EVs but gubmint mandates that certain %% of cars produced by any German manufacturer must be EVs. So when they can't sell enough money-losing EVs they can't even compensate by increasing production of profitable ICE cars, because see above. This is why VW is closing plants and laying off workers, not because "wonderful and superior Chinese EV eating their lunch".

Right, those are crappy ticking time bombs. If those start crossing our border I'm going to avoid them, stay out of parking garages, don't park near one etc.,. Unlike the Ford CEO who's driving one instead of a Ford.

Incorrect. That only accelerated the decline already underway.

Germany's main cause of decline is demographic and always will be.

Probably true, but they shot themselves in the foot with the emission scam. They lost a shit load of money on that. Trust is a big thing when buying a car, so between that, lawsuits, and killing future demand it was over.

I haven't seen a VW on the road for a good 3-4 years. You know an automaker is doing decent if you see 3-4 of their models on a 1 hour trip or you see one at a grocery store or event parking lot. Lying to customers and government will not get you business.
131   RWSGFY   2024 Dec 28, 1:28pm

Their emissions "scam" didn't affect the end users. In fact the buyers of these TDI Jettas were more happy with the power and fuel economy before the fix than after. Some even held out as long as possible to keep their cars in "pre-fix" condition.

That's fine and dandy, but it was negative press. People lost faith in the brand and new potential buyers stopped looking.

The lie didn't move me at all, as I was never in the market for a VW. But if it moves 5-10% of your sales, you're fucked. You can't blatantly lie in business. Some get away with it, most don't. The performance is a moot point. With greenies everywhere, lying about emissions likely lost you a good chunk of business. Again I don't care as someone that drives a V8 full sized SUV. A lot of people do care.
