So why does US farming need saving? Are the Chinese farmers that much more efficient? Or is there some inherent advantage of Communism that needs explaining? In case you're unaware, one of the tenets of Capitalism is competition, where weaker producers fail. Protecting the weak is very un-Capitalistic. Does this financial package prove Trump is a Socialist? (I think I'm getting the hang of hyperbole that is so popular right now.)

Currency manipulation by China, and Chinese subsidies. It's not a level playing field. It's clear that US farmers need a safe space under Trump's skirt, protected from the reality of the real world. I'm not a fan of too much government intervention, but many conservatives are not small gov conservatives and Trump is not a Libertarian though he borrows quite a few elements from it (peace/isolationism, states rights etc.), he borrows elements from every angle, the left, the right and the center. That was clear from the beginning. This is likely a smart move to get and/or keep voters in the heartland even though I don't particularly like it. We have many different views here amongst those that - overall - support Trump (or at least thing he is the lesser evil. At least he's spending the money domestically, which is much better than anything the left has to show for. If they get their act together they could score points on boondoggles like this, but certainly not in their current state where they clearly hate their country and want to sell it out. People will be looking at it like this, option a) is domestic preference for certain groups (farmers) and option b) open borders/ice abolished, high crime, low wages and all the money spent on non-citizens instead. They will stick with Trump until the left has a viable alternative.

Absolutely internationally he has had much more success wrt peace talks and denuclearization than anyone before since Reagan. I mean NK is denuclearizing and started peace talks with SK! Russian-US relationship which needed betterment desperately is finally getting better and Syria is not being bombed 24/7 anymore. Huge successes. States rights is more of a mixed bag but overall he gives more weight to states rights. Yes, there are rumors around revoking the CA pollution regulation but nothing has happened yet. Also you need to consider that CA basically has gone rogue and has been deliberately breaking important federal laws that were never states rights laws and could not function without being enforced federally, such as immigration/ICE. The sanctuary crap has gone way too far so I would expect some more battles and retaliations wrt CA.

This is IMO part of the issue. This is again all about the "words" and feelz of the words. He never threatened unilateral action despite his strong wording and he always says he believes negotiations are possible and could/will be fruitful and in the end both save their face. This is very different from Boosh invading a country and waging war til the end on faulty intelligence and "nation-building" delusions. The war in Iraq left too many dead and put people back in power worse than Saddam, in NK the situation can lamost only get better and no shot has been fired.

But let's wait and see, I think these are intermittent positive assessments, maybe every year or so it's useful to reflect on how the nation has been doing. Don't forget the raging economy. Can't see much weakness so far.

Then there's a third part of the problem which is that big business and big government in the US have both colluded with the media to sell the spin that any correction of this problem over the last 30 years would lead to instant catastrophe for US economy.

But at the same time do not believe for a second that trade wars cannot be "won." They can be and they are being, right now. The EU is screaming because they know good and damn well that the claims of "everyone loses" was and is a lie, and they're scared **less by the fact that we haven't seen the market go to hell as everyone predicted would happen.

Instead the EU auto manufacturers know that they either have to drop their tariffs and restrictions on American cars or lose a good part of their export market here in the US. They want both the advantage here and there..... just like the Chinese want to steal all our intellectual property and sell our corporations slave labor, and call this 'free trade'.

It's not -- its theft and fraud, and anything that threatens their gravy train is thus "bad" from their point of view.
