Librem 5, the phone that focuses on security by design and privacy protection by default. Running Free/Libre and Open Source software and a GNU+Linux Operating System designed to create an open development utopia, rather than the walled gardens from all other phone providers.

A fully standards-based freedom-oriented system, based on Debian and many other upstream projects, has never been done before–we will be the first to seriously attempt this.

The Librem 5 phone will be the world’s first ever IP-native mobile handset, using end-to-end encrypted decentralized communication.

Many others have attempted Open Source phones and failed. I hope this one works, especially since I just discovered that you cannot turn off wifi or Bluetooth on Android or iOS. "Turning it off" in the controls on those phones merely disconnects you from current access points, but leaves them on so they can spy on your location with great precision and open you up to various exploits:

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/sep/21/ios-11-apple-toggling-wifi-bluetooth-control-centre-doesnt-turn-them-off

On iOS 11, pressing the wifi toggle immediately disconnects the iPhone or iPad from any wifi networks, but leaves the wireless radio available for use by location services, scanning for the names of nearby wifi access points. The Bluetooth toggle operates in a similar fashion. ...

A similar thing happens in Android smartphones, which use wifi as part of their location services. Switching wifi off prevents it from connecting to wifi access points, but allows it to continue periodically scanning for access point names to help pinpoint its location.

Damn, the second video on this page is really good.

Old comic format showing cellphone dystopia.

The song is what they made for Donnie Darko. IF you still like films, I'd recommend that film, NOT the director's cut either, but the theatrical cut. Richard Kelley was a one hit wonder director, all his other films are terrible - I strongly do not recommend them.

He's like Neill Blomkamp that did District 9, but 10 times worse. I don't know how he managed to make Donnie Darko, but that's his only good film.

But he is right, wechat is the best app out there in terms of functionality. No doubt about it, you can do a lot with it. Not coding such an app just because of the potential for abuse doesn't make any sense

It's a decent movie but these movies repeat every decade, adjusted for the new (tech) villains and problems of our times. Momo is a really oldschool German one

This seriously happens. If you have an Alexa or a Google Home, or possibly even Siri - fake a discussion about a pet you'd never own with your family, and see what ads you start getting.

They are 24/7 listening devices. This is a simple test. I've gotten a FEW people to try it, but not with Siri. It's the 1984's telescreen. I'm giving you a test so you can verify it's true, if you don't do the test, whatever. We've been trying to warn you for years.

This is 100% true. I can't stand it, but the tech makes life easier. I don't do anything illegal and have the resources to fight anything that infringes on me in a way I don't like. Most don't.

Fact is we don't have the time to go through all our food weekly with 3 pre-teen boys. They add what they need to the grocery list via alexa. And I know that bitch is always listening. Is what it is. Saves us hours per week easily. I'll dump it when it's time when the kids are out of the house. Until then I'll bite the bullet and have big brother listen in on our bull shit conversations. Nothing good to hear besides bad jokes and bull shitting with kids. No money laundering or murder going on here.

It's not so much that Siri or Alexa is listening for your drug transactions, it's that it's recording information that can be used to construct a LLM simulacrum that can have you say anything "they" want you to say - a deep fake for every man, woman, and child in this world.

Overweight belligerent redneck on the train drinking a Trump beer sort of ruined it for me.

I've noticed a lot of customer service systems ask for voice prompts now days. For the exact reason you stated, I only use the keypad.

True, that artist has a severe case of TDS. I've seen it in his other drawings. No thought as to why people would vote for Trump, just raw hate for those he sees as beneath himself.

I bet you $100 you're incorrect about this, and I will come to your place to deliver the bill, along with a pizza, if you're correct.
190   Misc   2023 Oct 3, 4:22am

Hopefully the "Pizza" isn't code for anything because Patrick's got this one right.
191   fdhfoiehfeoi   2023 Oct 3, 8:07am

They test every year, it's plastered all over government sites. If you want info on why to avoid, see my thread.

@Misc I didn't get any notification.

I didn't want to spend $100 and have to hand deliver a pizza anyhow but I would have.

And no, I despise pedophiles, you cannot imagine how much I hate them. Victimizing a child, it's as bad as murder. I oppose my government in part because they allowed this with Epstein. Our government is invalid because it's immoral. We should overthrow it.

Anyhow I actually like pizza, and there's a decent place near Patrick. It's kind of a heart attack in a box, but once a month, that's fine.

@richwicks The test is suppose to happen at about 2:20pm East Coast time.

Glad to hear the place has good food Patrick will enjoy it.
195   fdhfoiehfeoi   2023 Oct 4, 6:27am

If he'd gone to the government sites, or read my thread he would have known that. Just another patnetter who wants to share opinions, but not take the time to do any research.
196   stereotomy   2023 Oct 4, 2:45pm

It pinged - I shut the phone off for 30 mins.

They just proved they can kill any one of us with 5G directed drones.

It happened at 2:18 PM Eastern. Looks like Patrick needs to decide on some pizza toppings.
198   Patrick   2023 Oct 4, 4:48pm

True, it looks like it did happen. I leave my phone off most of the time, but lots of people are reporting getting this.
199   richwicks   2023 Oct 4, 5:22pm

YEP - I owe @Patrick a $100.

If you want to collect..

Makes one wonder what use it is when it didn't work in Maui...

Pick out a pie.
202   Onvacation   2023 Oct 4, 6:06pm

I was in a room full of people when the alert went off this morning. Twenty plus cellphone alarms went off at the same time, including mine.

I forgot to turn off my phone!

I looked around checking for sudden deaths but everyone survived the incident.

Most phones are made in china. It wouldn't be too hard to rig them into little shrapnel bombs...
203   Patrick   2023 Oct 4, 11:39pm

@richwicks I never made the bet, but pizza for lunch sounds good. Maybe some others want to show up and make it a mini-meetup.
204   richwicks   2023 Oct 5, 1:24am

@Patrick, I'll do it and I'll buy. I think the park is very nearby. Perhaps that's the best place to meet up.
205   Patrick   2023 Oct 5, 6:57am

@Undoctored Want some pizza?

Any other readers near Palo Alto?
208   fdhfoiehfeoi   2023 Oct 5, 7:20am

Some people reported they got the alert after turning their phone back on. Others said the phone was turned on for them. We took our Roku off the internet(unplugged cable), and put our cellphones in a closet. No alerts, were not turned on for us.
209   Misc   2023 Oct 5, 8:23am

Do you know how many convicts in jail were outed for having cell phones they weren't supposed to have?
210   ForcedTQ   2023 Oct 5, 11:37am

No alert for me, I was on a Zoom meeting at the time too.

You have any idea how stupid that this is it's even possible?

The cell tower knows where you are.

The phone companies know these phones are being used in prison.

https://slaynews.com/news/russia-prepares-for-wwiii-as-public-receives-nuke-incoming-warnings/

The Russian public has been taking part in nuclear attack drills across the country as the nation appears to be preparing for World War III.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, sirens blared out across Russia as part of a bone-chilling drill for an incoming nuclear attack.

Maybe the US is planning for, or even hoping for a nuclear attack, and that was the purpose behind the cellphone test.

Given that the US government is directly responsible for ~17 million deaths from the toxxine, it seems plausible that they would have no problem killing millions of Americans with a provoked nuclear attack from Russia, just to declare martial law so that they have a reason not to let Trump win for a third time. They know that things will go badly for them if they ever lose their grip on the DOJ, the CIA, and the corporate media.

Sounds like the perfect phone for drug dealers, organized crime figures and criminals.

Also great for corrupt politicians.

The test is conducted yearly.
