The Human Toll Of The Government Shutdown

#governmentshutdownI am doing some careful thinking on the human cost of this record-breaking government shutdown. Some 800,000 Federal workers have been with pay for over three weeks. If we assume that each household has three people (domestic partners, wives, kids, and parents) we have over 2,400,000 people affected.

Next comes the government contractors as follows:

Mr. Light estimates there are 4.1 million federal contractors and grant recipients, not all of whom have been affected by the shutdown. The majority — about 2.8 million — are in service jobs, from health aides to computer programmers.

Let us assume the 25% are affected or roughly one million workers. They too have families and dependents. This brings this total to three million additional people.

It is hard to quantify and identify all the small businesses that provide services to the government employees affected by the shutdown. I would guess 300,000 workers. applying the same formula, we have 900,000 people in this category suffering without pay.

I come up with a total of 6,300,000 people suffering without checks.

Politicians doing battle, please think about all the suffering out there.

Kinda rams home the idea that EVERYBODY needs a emergency fund with 3-6 months of expenses saved ready to go if needed. If you don't have that, you're fucking yourself should you stop receiving your paycheck for ANY reason. If you're so fucking stupid that you're living paycheck to paycheck, FUCK YOU! You need to spend this time to figure out how to live on less than you make, I don't feel sorry for you because you are STUPID!

Wake up call to start managing you finances like an ADULT, and not a fucking child. There are things you CAN'T afford, learn to accept that. Live below your means and prepare for the future. Move if you have to; get a different/more jobs if you have to; stay out of debt. Tell the assbag money changers to ram a pole up their ass straight through to their brain.

Ppl, in many states, a furloughed govt employee can collect unemployment, and thus pay the credit card minimums, while waiting for the back pay to kick in.

And remember, unlike the private sector, where once you lose 'work', it's pretty much gone forever until the next job (or gig) kicks in, the public worker is just put on hold.

I was going to make a similar comment but I think you covered it well.

ABC News had a segment on a furloughed gov employee household and interviewed them at home. I presume ABC was trying to show a "middle American" couple affected to get camaraderie and sympathy from the viewers. But what I saw was a very nice upscale abode that hammered home the point that this couple stretched to buy an expensive home rather than buy a more modest place that would allow them to put away savings.

TDS on the left. They refused to pass the budget. Their fault for protecting illegals over Americans.

An element here is that many (though not all, but a large percentage) of govt employees do not live in fear of continuous layoffs.

This is in far contrast to let's say an engineer or a plant operator in the private sector, where for any business quarter, layoffs can occur. For the private sector ppl, it's almost imperative that there's a 6 to 12 month emergency fund in place because ppl may need to re-locate after an economic correction. On the other foot, many govt employees expect that paycheck to be there, year after year, so what's the harm in buying a bigger house, car, or vacation?

I hear that Uber and Lyft are hiring. Maybe the furloughed workers could try to experience the majesty of the gig economy?

Nothing to worry about. None of them could hold down a real job in the private sector, anyway, so all they can do is wait for the government gravy to come back.

Really, what can they put on their resume: "Professional Loafer, did as little as possible in between checks. Argued about parking spaces for first three hours of work day over coffee, then meandered over to where my nominal job was. PC appointment, so I don't really have the fake credential I used and I don't really know how to do anything."

Lol, actually it's the Republicans refusing to pass a budget, apparently you are watching fake news.

We touched on "budget" in the other thread. This isn't a "budget", it's a "Spending Bill". Why must you continue to post crap, thread after thread? Please get it right and understand the differences.

In the end if the economy tanks because of government shutdown Trump will be carrying the Mantle.

Ha, that's funny..

Chuck and Nancy want to buy a new car. Problem is, they only want to pay for 3 tires, not 4. But, we'll just blame that on Trump, right?

Trump gave them the budget, they refused it. You are the fake news one.
