I also did this in high school, because I really enjoyed chemistry. I had potassium iodide and lead nitrate in a chemistry kit, and figured out they would combine to make potassium nitrate which could be isolated by evaporating off the solvent. Not sure what I did with the bright yellow and toxic lead iodide which was a byproduct. Probably threw it out.

And it worked. Made a little explosion when combined with charcoal and sulphur in the right combination and lit.
