Carrey was always over rated. When you see a funny person on a verity comedy show like In Living Color it's usually to showcase talented people. Comedy is just one dimension of their ability. You see Goldie Hawn from Laugh IN went on to do serious and various roles, Dan Akroyd, even John Beliushi before he dies, was gearing up to do serious roles. James Belushi never did a comedy slap schtick role, word is all of those roles he played were roles his brother was slated to get a decade earlier.
His last movie Neighbors was a Dark comedy, with more drama than funny pranks.
Jim Carrey has always been a two dimensional character, even the Truman Show, seemed forced and contrite. Compared to Mask and Pet Detective franchise. BTW, the only things he was decent in. Dumb and Dumber depended on Jeff Daniels. Take Jeff out of that movie and it would have been another crude movie about Jim Carrey making face contortions for the camera. The plot would have been irrelevant.
