Anyone familiar with Boise?

Wife and I going to visit for a weekend vacation and to scope it out as a potential move away from the congested hell hole Silicon Valley,

Planning a trip to go have a look.

As said above, a lot is made about whether the Bay Area is a good place for school aged kids. The positive side is that they will have endless opportunities and they will be pushed. The negative side is that, well, they will be pushed (competition and pressure).

Putting kids through school in the Bay Area weighs heavily on parents, no doubt.

When I was a kid in the 70s California was 91% white. I don't remember anyone bitching until about a decade ago.

Took family to Boise for a week to check the place out since its been on our list of places to ditch CA for. I stayed in downtown Boise but drove all over looking at properties and doing fun things with kids.

Negatives
Usually I look for and find major negatives but honestly, I couldn’t not find any at least when I was there but one might be the cold in winter. Some minor negatives would be all the building going on I could see why this pisses natives off there with all the people moving in.
Pros
Income tax rate 1.25 to 6.925%
Property tax rate .69% is average
Sales tax 6%
Gas tax 25 cents per gallon
Very clean even in downtown. I didn’t smell pot everywhere like I do in LA. Only saw two possible homeless people one of which had a sign during the day, at night I saw non and no tents or anything anywhere. Lots of people riding bikes. Everyone was very friendly unlike here where it seams half the time if someone approaches out of nowhere there is an ulterior motive. Children playing all over without adult supervision or at least without any that I could see, this reminded me of when I was a kid. Tons of green spaces and places for kids and families to have fun, parks everywhere. Quick access to outdoors, mountains, rivers, camping. Very little police presence or at least they don’t stick out, only saw them when there was an accident when a truck crashed by a river, city was there replacing fencing damaged within 30 minutes, here shit would stay damaged for god know how long. Population seems 90%+ white. At no time anywhere did I feel unsafe.
By the end of our trip my oldest son which I though would be the hardest to sell the idea of moving on because he would have to make new friends, looked at me grinning and said “I love this place lets move”

One lady I talked to told me she doesn’t and everyone else doesn’t like Californians moving in. Then she told me the state is run by a bunch of uneducated county bumpkins that work in government part time, that it was to right wing and that she hates Trump. She told me she had lived there for 30yrs. Then she told me she was from Pacific Palisades CA (typical limousine liberal) and the only one I encountered.

Other Items of note there are a lot of Mormons they make up the largest religious group at 16% in Boise but over 25% for whole state, followed by Catholics and other Christian groups. There is no lottery. I didn’t see much public transportation.

No one does. My buddy out in Bozeman/Belgrade/Livingston MT area hates them (CA transplants). First time I went to Bozeman was 20 years ago. It's done and I wouldn't move there now. It's trash. Over exaggeration, but there's like 50 craft beer/booze shops everywhere. Craft beer is the enemy of neighborhoods. Not for drunkenness, it's because you know you've been hipstered. You know the woke have come once craft beer starts spiking. No joke either.
33   WookieMan   2020 Jul 12, 11:08am

Bozeman is the per capita leader I believe for White Claw. Cowboys are dead apparently.... The men out there think it's okay to drink. I'm astonished when I visit my buddy. You can't even get a normal beer out there either, it's all BS craft beer and some guy throwing it in a vat and calling it some stupid name with shit graphics.

I'm in SoCal. Once thought about moving, but seriously I'm old, have golden handcuffs and weather is huge for me. I just decided to carve out good niche, own my own inc. with paper losses so taxes don't effect me, stopped at two kids, going with cheap/family oriented catholic schools with no zim zer bullshit, low property taxes, joined a local country club for some beugey.

I do think this is the last generation that can live in Cali, because in a decade comes the marxists bullshit, so the plan is to encourage kids to go to college out of state and just move to where they go and hope they settle there and start families.

If it were me and my wife was cool with it, I would just live in a freedom, low tax state and spend 90 days in Thailand, then 90 in Bali, etc. Just maximum stay hop in cheap, friendly places during the bad winter months.

Thailand is swampy as shit in the interior, but get to the coast/islands it's not that bad. Spent 30 days on Ko Tao once and lived in a beach bungalow, one of the best times of my life. Cheap as shit too, but that was in 2000 when there was a bhat crisis, so may be more expensive today. $4 a day I lived like a king.

I have a neighbor who is from Boise, she says it’s okay.
I’m sure it’s cold in the winter. She says she’s going to go back someday but I wonder when.

I’m thinking about the subject lately, and I’m not sure what the solution is.

I’m okay in Baja Sur Mexico and it’s even comfortable in the summer on the Pacific, but I worry about any health emergency being deadly. I’m bilingual and know the area and have some friends there. I’m going to spend time there when it’s winter in California with rain and cold.

Florida is okay in the area where I lived, but summer can be rainy and hot which turns you into a steamed clam at the gas station. If I lived in Florida, I would leave for 6 weeks per year at least.

I know a guy who is in Colombia about half the year, the other half in Florida. He’s Colombian so he knows where to go down there.

I’m really okay with my situation in California except for the taxes, but I calculate savings of 7 months of no heat nor AC, and other positives and I won’t leave permanently for the time being. My situation is a bit unique, I’m lucky.

The inexpensive countries around that may be live able are largely Spanish speaking.
Nicaragua (cheap), Costa Rica (better), Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile. Mexico is I guess another but it is not so cheap sometimes.

At least I am fortunate enough to be able to travel and can afford to spend money on it. I know some guys who have the money, but bad health or wife with bad health, other guys afraid to spend money, others wives don’t want to travel, others can’t stop working, they’re stuck.

My biggest issue with CA is I don't really see a future here for my kids. CA is on the decline and I just don't see it getting any better and can't see my kids raising a family here.

100% agreed on craft beer. WC is for womyn, I have one once in a blue moon on a really hot day outside the summer cabin. This hipster shit is unnerving. Just make a good clean regular pilsner without fanfare and shut up and I'll be a happy customer. Beer wise Europe is still far ahead cause craft beer derailed the US beer brewing progress.

Making good clean regular pilsner is hard. Dumping shitload of hops to mask ones inability to brew good beer and calling it "Beaver Vomit Quadruple IPA" is easy.

My 1st reaction is Boise sucks to the high heavens and a very dangerous place to live, stay out!!!

However, I currently live in the country about 45min from Boise itself not to far from Ontario, Or and have basically lived in this state most my life. I lived and worked in Boise all through the 80s and 90s and in 2000 started migrating out of the city wanting my own air to breath so to speak moving west of Boise city, to Star then Middleton now near a small town called New Plymouth. I'm sure your life style choices and such are a bit diff. then my own.

Treasure Valley (Boise and surrounding towns) is a phenomenal place to live, natural recreation of most any sort depending on the direction you roll. Green belts by the miles and lots of community supported activities. Knowing what I know I would be considering the towns mentioned N. West of Boise, Eagle, Star, Middleton along the foothills on 1 side and Boise river on the other, if you are not looking to live more in the city itself ( Boise/Meridian) I thought I read you would like a bit of space. There is a nice small sub going in about a mile from my place, don't know a lot about it but think it's custom builds the lots are 2-3 acres, private wells etc and hear New Plymouth has fantastic school system, small being the city pop is <2k where the country pumpkins get their education. ;) Lots of wineries, craft/micro breweries and we do have lotteries, and fairly close casinos Jack Pot NV for 1 and speaking of pot I live with/in 20mis of several pot shops in OR. however ISP frowns on Idahoans transporting across boarders ;)

Here is a Realtor I have had business dealings with you could contact, is a hard worker, very ethical and confidential when it comes to her clients. https://www.susanlikesrealestate.com/

Sadly, I agree. I just cannot imagine California turning around and becoming a reasonable place to live.

The insane left is in charge of California and is heading straight toward the genocide of the white minority in the state, down to 37% and falling fast.

All the rich white tech execs who promoted leftist hatred for 20 years think they are immune, but they are in for a surprise. BLM is going to murder them in their beds just because they are white.

Interesting school environments around:

I know a case at my nearby HS comes under Fremont union, some kids 3 years ago created a kill list of all Africa American kids who are a very small minority. These lengthy conversations took place on social media. Some how it ended up on kron4 tv channel news. School and police investigation found that "no names" were used so no action has taken on the final 6 suspects. One of the African American girl still fights for justice at change.org.

I know few more like this kind of bullying. I learned from mine and other that school is very defensive and trying to frame and put victim in defense position and push back to maintain its reputation. Any evidence you provide is not good enough to take any action. Not sure if this is how schools operate elsewhere.

Most of these kids were born and raised here and has no exposure to any tough neighborhoods like lots of other places. But still some are very toxic that once I found in social media channels of school clubs after an alert from my child. One of the club "VP", who is an Asian Indian descendant use "you n...r" (n word) in almost in every message on daily club chat for 6 months! Also he posted more explicit sexual messages on a group of 85 kids of both boys and girls.I copied the thread and gave it to school and was told they will take care but no apparent change happened and that person ended up at uc sb. School like the result and careless on behavior.

Note, most of these kids parents are rich and can afford to send their attorney to school to deal with school. At least I know a case where a Caucasian parent sent his attorney when his girl was discriminated.

At the same time, because of the pressure or other factors most of these kids doing fine and excel in both academic and profession I guess.

Untended consequences of 1978 Prop 13:

Unlimited 1978 prop 13 entitlements come and haunting their own kids now who want to buy their own separate home.
I happen to talk to a young couple who were born and raised in ca got inherited properties love to see continuation of prop 13
for its continued declining tax rates. I looked up one of the property tax rate is less than 0.1%. Statistically speaking, they're living on tax free but get all state services at expense of every other loser in the state.

I don't know how it works in the long run, but valley still provides opportunities for immigrants who can compromise quality of life. If I'm not an immigrant, I'd seriously consider moving away from valley or at least move to suburbs.

The positive side of the virus is creating opportunities for folks who live in places far away from the valley including other states.

We are looking at the houses by Rocky Mountain High School around Chinden blvd and Linder road. My wife's friend moved there from the same city we live in now and loves the area and schools plus it would be nice to be close to one person that we know already our kids are all the same age range. I would like a larger piece of land but wife wants to be close to work/ and be more centrally located. We are also looking at Star and Eagle area.

Wife's friends always screw things up ;) That area is nice use to be most all farm land not that many years ago now it's just fields of subdivisions and commerce of 1 type or the other. I'm sure you will find a great place to live that's a decent area most buildings and such being less the 20yrs old, a few older subs but most are fairly new. that school is only about 12yrs old. I am out far enough not to deal with to much of the Californication destruction of the Treasure Valley.

That's the problem though. Even decent and more chill people from CA bring a lot of baggage and expectations of what their new area should be like. So they try and change the previous normal to something close to CA, but not full blown CA. Even 50% CA policies and ideas suck ass. It destroyed Bozeman, MT over the last 5 years or so. I know TX is having their issues with the CA peeps as well.

I wish I could live further out, my son asked me if we move can we shoot in our back yard l if we move, sad to tell him no unless we move further out. Speaking of guns where can you shoot out there I didn't see any ranges, do people just drive on the roads to CA and shoot all the signs on the side of the highway I counted about 500 bullet holes?

The wife and have been looking at Boise, Sandpoint and Coeur D'Alene. We wanted easy access to the outdoors for hiking, and skiing would be a plus as well. It's all relative, but IMHO, these areas have already been discovered. From a bang for the buck perspective for a nice home on a good piece of land, you are going to have to move farther out in the periphery, which isn't necessariy a bad thing. But living centrally in these areas, you are not going to find increadible prices any more. Too many relocated Californians. And central Boise is a lot of early 1900 homes that flippers have dressed up and now expect insane prices for. I suppose if you are handy, you can buy a 1920's Craftsman and fix up yourself.

Bend, OR also has already been discovered. Too late. We are looking at other mountain locales, but so are other folks who have cashed out or are cashing out from the insanely priced RE and liberal policy destroyed areas. From a pricing perspective, it is a matter of getting in on the upward slope and not the peak.

I don't look at housing up there, but these areas are awesome. I'd buy there for sure. Had a delayed flight and SW lost my god damn snowboard (not really their fault, ran to the connecting flight in Vegas just to make it) so didn't get to snowboard up in Sandpoint. Forget the resort name. Was gonna do a rental, but said fuck it. Did drive up there and it looked nice.

You also have some great places to go with relatively short drive. Glacier NP. Yellowstone NP is ~7 hours. Fuck tons of state and national forests. Winters can suck, but never understood why it's not more popular. First time I drove through was when I was 18 and it hasn't changed a ton from what I recall. If you can deal with winter those would be my go to places.

Is that a bad thing though? Cold is a character builder. Fun activities to do in the cold too. Went ice fishing with my buddies for the first time in Montana this last winter. With the equipment out there now, it's a blast. You're not cold at all. It's an adventure. Drink some beers and catch some fish. I personally like the change of seasons, just wish there were closer big mountains in IL for snowboarding.

My biggest issue is sun. Getting dark at 4:30pm local is shitty. Messes with me. I can handle the cold though.

Yeah. That's one of the draws of living in Northern California. All winter long, we can go to the Sierras for that when we want to, and stay home when we don't want to.

As I have written in other comments on patrick's site, the tradeoffs for living here are not worth it, though.

Sandpoint and Coeur D'Alene are a bit farhter north than Boise. The average winter month lows (Dec-Feb) farther north are in the low 20's, highs in the 30's. Average high summer temps (Jun-Aug) are 70's to low '80's, and lows in the upper 40's. Average annual snowfall: 59 inches.

Boise is warmer. Average winter month lows (Dec-Feb) in the mid to upper 20's. Average winter highs in the upper 30's to mid 40's. Summer lows mid 50's-60. Summer highs 80's to low 90's. Average annual snowfall: 19 inches.

I get the appeal of CA for sure. You're a short drive to some great skiing/boarding but live in a temperate climate at home. Wife and I have looked at relocating out there multiple times now. It just doesn't make sense to do it for weather and activities. You sleep 6-8 hours a day. Work another 8-10. By the time you deal with traffic, fires, taxes, high cost of living, regulations, etc it makes little to zero sense to live in CA.

Idaho is very appealing. Utah isn't bad, but I can't stand their Mormon booze laws. Montana is okay, but CA commies are taking over the larger cities/towns. Washington and Oregon are in the same boat as CA. Beautiful but managed like horse shit. I'd do parts of ID, AZ, CO and WY if I ever moved west. Maybe MT if we could work remotely and get some land 40-60 minutes from a bigger town.

So far looks like schools are much better in ID at least where I’m at. My two older sons really like the classes much more, my oldest went on about how much better and more hands on everything is. His art class has way better equipment, and he is doing a lot of lab work in science class instead of dumb work sheets. Wife told me all the kids seem much kinder and respectful of adults. My oldest son made a friend day one and kid called my wife Mam. Kid came up to my youngest in class and told him out of the blue if he needs anything or any help to ask, my wife was blown away. She is having a hard time and use to being on the defensive so much dealing with schools in CA she doesn’t know what to do in ID.
School is full time for younger grades and the rest are slowly opening up full time. They seem to also get a lot less homework so far. Oldest is looking forward to getting his learners permit to drive at 14 1/2yo.

Can't California mount a military campaign to annex these Kommie scoffers? Children who are taught to think are a danger to the State!
