Anyone wants to risk a bet on the eventual number of sick people? Dead people?

Looks like situation is out of control in Italy, Iran, South Korea and Japan.
Virus 1 - Humanity 0.

It also looks like the economic damage will go increasing. Airlines will be grounded in places. Factory and school closed. People quarantined at home.
203   Patrick   2020 Feb 24, 8:09am

Stock market is definitely ill with Corona virus.

This could be good in the long term, as people see the advantages of strong borders and local production.
204   Shaman   2020 Feb 24, 8:55am

Traffic at the port has slowed to a crawl. Factories remain shuttered in China. Companies over here are running out of inventory.
This could be a black swan event.

Should show that manufacturing some basic stuff should be a matter of national security. We should be making all of our own components, tools, and machinery.

Apparently new cases are popping up in Italy or Japan and no one knows why, or what's the link with China.
Given this is the case, there may be millions infected, like, soon.
I'll venture a prediction: there will be cases popping up like this in the Bay Area within 2 weeks.

There were one or more patient zeros in Italy who traveled to China and likely brought it back. Parts of Italy are full of Chinese. They need to aggressively contain it now and it looks like that's what they're doing. The US has the big advantage of controlling all the ports of entry. I don't think it will spread here.

Word.

Imagine, if you will, an America with its own manufacturing capabilities, tens of millions of jobs, and independence from Middle East oil imports. That is the America of ⁦@realDonaldTrump⁩. The Democrat ”globalist” nightmare is dying before our eyes. https://t.co/VQfjaNOpSr

Trump will be a one term president if the economy tanks between now and November.

If the market tanks because of the Corona Virus - do you really think people are going to blame Trump who is trying to get a better handle on the borders and decouple us from China?

Depends why the economy tanks. If it tanks due to corona virus, I don't think many will hold him in blame for it.

At the end of the day, it’s the economy stupid. People don’t care why it goes up or how it tanks. The guy at the helm gets all credits and the blames. Of course, this is only one man’s opinion.

$20 says you are wrong and full blown hysterical panic is arriving shortly. If you are Asian, look asian, have an asian speaking accent or have been to asia recently - lay low and start packing.

What? Hasn't this been around since December? It's basically March and we're under 90K infected worldwide in 2-3 months, originating from a country with 1B plus people. We're talking 0.0000128% of the world has an infection. 0.00000037% overall have died. *All based off 7B world population.

If I was 6 months old or 85 I'd actually care. The market is reacting to China completely fucking up and what the reaction is going to be. The quarantines and supply chain disruption are real. The actual virus is a joke though. No one is going to care if you're Asian and think you have a "slightly" more fatal flu bug.
214   Heraclitusstudent   2020 Feb 24, 4:26pm

The current numbers mean nothing given the self-reinforced nature of contagion.
The question is: are we closely tracking every infected person and preventing new contagion?
The answer is no. In several countries there are people walking around who probably don't know they are infected. Thus they can take the subway or a plane, attend conferences, go to work, etc...
How many handshakes are there between you and a Chinese person in Hubei? Not that many.
You may say 1% death is a joke. 1% of 1 billion is 10 millions. And 1% can be your mother, or your kid, or you.

If we start frantically rebuilding our own manufacturering infrastructure because of this, it will probably be the rough equivalent of retooling for a world war economically.

And even if that death rate holds, and this is worldwide, we will still close out the year even more overpopulated than when the year started.

It's 6 zeros past the decimal for world population. The death rate is barely above your typical influenza yet the US stock market just dumped 3% in a day? This virus is a joke and it's at the feet of the Chinese.

I've lost people close to me due to the common flu. This is slightly more dangerous to the young and old. WTF are you going to do though? I'm going to live my life and have a blast. Not going to sit here and worry.

That's fine. I take the bait every time. I do think this bot has a human that intervenes from time to time though. Some of the responses are impossible to program.

BEIJING, CHINA -- China on Monday declared an immediate and "comprehensive" ban on the trade and consumption of wild animals, a practice believed responsible for the deadly coronavirus outbreak.

The country's top legislative committee approved a proposal "prohibiting the illegal wildlife trade, abolishing the bad habit of overconsumption of wildlife, and effectively protecting the lives and health of the people," state television reported.

Previous temporary bans have been put in place, including after the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) virus killed hundreds of people in China and Hong Kong in 2002-03 and was also traced to wild animal consumption.
224   Patrick   2020 Feb 25, 7:32am

Even the propaganda arm of the globalist Democrats, the NY Times, has to admit that coronavirus is a threat to their beloved project of destroying all national borders for the sake of global capital:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/25/opinion/coronavirus-cases-spread.html

Liberals have partisan incentives that run the other way, toward emphasizing the White House’s unpreparedness in the face of a clear and present threat. But these incentives have so far been outweighed by liberalism’s ideological bias toward global openness, its anxiety about saying or doing anything that might give aid and comfort to anti-globalization forces, its fear of ever sounding too, well, Trump-y in the face of foreign threats. Thus the liberal instinct toward minimization: It’s not much worse than the flu, panicking makes things only worse, don’t spread conspiracy theories about its origins, racism toward Chinese people is the real danger here.

I wonder if a glass or two of red wine helps prevent coronavirus the way it helps to prevent other flus.

This means probably thousands infected in Italy.

Well if it is 10% = 700 millions.
20% of that are severe or critical disease, = 140 millions showing up at hospitals.
How many hospital beds are there in the US?
239   Heraclitusstudent   2020 Feb 26, 9:43am

Today Kuwait, Bahrain, Pakistan, Lebanon, Brazil, Algeria, Austria, Croatia, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, France, Greece, Finland, North Macedonia.... all have cases reported.

Let them die. What else are you going to do? Vast majority of deaths are older people. They've already lived a good life. I've heard that a good amount of people infected have zero symptoms of anything. What sells more?

Cancer kills much more people, yet we just live with it and the NFL puts on pink shoes and gloves in October. The media is bored and trying to get ad sales. This is really all this is as sick as that sounds.
