Anyone wants to risk a bet on the eventual number of sick people? Dead people?

Looks like Europe coming in anywhere between 15%-30% again per country, and the US around 25%. Washington and New York continue to separate themselves from the rest as front-runners, CA is 3rd. Asian cases continue to decline.
661   mell   2020 Mar 12, 3:31pm

They're closing all sfusd schools for 3 weeks. That should help massively containing spread in SF.

The NY Times shows a decline in the last two days:

from https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html

If that keeps flat or declining, it's a very good sign.
663   Patrick   2020 Mar 12, 5:16pm

Another good graph from them, https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/world/coronavirus-maps.html

Puts the deaths in perspective.
664   mell   2020 Mar 12, 5:25pm

The deaths are mounting a bit due to Italy where many old people are dying. Overall the cases have been shifting to the milder version with now 90% mild (was 85% mild just a week ago or so). Maybe this is the 2nd S strain that is less aggressive and has been more prevalent lately. The page says US is at over 400 for today but they start and stop the day at GMT 0 hours, so that would be a record, although as percentage of new cases around 25% (almost unchanged). I think as more testing is now done faster (plus the Cruise ship numbers coming in) we will see a rise for a few days and then hopefully stagnation before the descent. SF has only 14 confirmed cases (of which 3 were brought in from outside for treatment), and with today's school closures and WFH policies I think CA can get this under control soon. WA and NY are the hotbeds that really need attention and drastic measures.
665   mell   2020 Mar 12, 5:27pm

Also out of 1644 active cases in the US currently only 10 are critical, or 0.6%. Some may become critical but for now that is a very low number.
667   Ceffer   2020 Mar 12, 6:33pm

Of course, we are talking about 'known and tested' cases, from people who registered the most severe symptoms to begin with in order to warrant testing. Those who just got a nose stinker and recovered spontaneously without testing aren't included.

Lots of scientific articles coming out daily:

Interesting I see AHCC discussed - it has always been a potent immune-stimulant and could be used as a supplement like Vitamin C, D, and red wine. Or even during the treatment phase.

Huh, the largest number of Chinese people in Italy is in Milan, where the epidemic is greatest:

Milan 18,918 (1.43% on total resident population)

Zero chance that graph is either accurate or shows future trends.
Zero.
The CDC can’t even test people unless they’re fucking dying in a hospital after getting buttfucked by a Chinese tranny!
They don’t have the kits.
And new cases can’t be confirmed without them.
Done.
671   mell   2020 Mar 12, 8:07pm

Again that's not true. Kaiser has drive through tests right here in SF. But you have to have symptoms, i.e. a viral load to detect. We can test 17k per day across the US. Yes the real numbers are higher as they're with the flu. Still that doesn't invalidate the data at hand, the only hard evidence to go by.

Right since they're ramping up testing. We're getting closer to the real numbers, esp. with the quarantines in effect.

This is fucking retarded. I just ordered TP on Ebay from Kentucky. What is wrong with those preppers?! Was actually reasonably priced but there are tons of listing selling a 4 pack for $40. Farking peppers! Or as AF would say: OPEN! FIRE! There's still enough in the stores from time to time when they restock but it goes quickly and I don't want to compete with a bunch of offended soyboy preppers and go dexter on them. So here's to you, eBay!

I don’t know if the order will actually be there but I was able to order for pickup Sunday night from Walmart Grocery. Also a few generic wipes as well.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom released a sweeping executive order on Thursday that allows the state to commandeer hotels and medical facilities to treat coronavirus patients and permits government officials to hold teleconferences in private without violating open meeting laws.

We’ve Got The Vaccine, Says Pentagon-Funded Company

BY PATRICK TUCKER
TECHNOLOGY EDITOR

MARCH 12, 2020

Canadian firm says it could make 10 million doses per month — if its innovative production method wins FDA approval.

A Canadian company says that it has produced a COVID-19 vaccine just 20 days after receiving the coronavirus’s genetic sequence, using a unique technology that they soon hope to submit for FDA approval.

Medicago CEO Bruce Clark said his company could produce as many as 10 million doses a month. If regulatory hurdles can be cleared, he said in a Thursday interview, the vaccine could start to become available in November.

An Israeli research lab has also claimed to have created a vaccine. But Clark says his company’s technique, which has already been proven effective in producing vaccines for seasonal flu, is more reliable and easier to scale.

“There are a couple of others who are claiming that they have — well, we will call them vaccine[s]” for COVID-19, he said. “But they’re different technologies. Some are RNA- or DNA-based vaccines that have not yet been proven in any indication yet, let alone this one. Hopefully, they’ll be successful.”

How did Clark’s team create one so quickly,? They use plants, not chicken eggs, as a bioreactor for growing vaccine proteins.

Traditional vaccine production requires eggs, a lot of them. Vaccine manufacturers inject the virus into the eggs, where it propagates. But using eggs is expensive, takes a long time, and is far from perfect. Mutations can yield vaccines that don’t match up to the virus they aim to shut down, Clark said

So Medicago doesn’t work with a live virus. Instead, it uses plants, a relatively new approach that has seen much advancement in the past decade. It inserts a genetic sequence into agrobacterium, a soil bacteria, which is taken up by plants — in this case, a close cousin to tobacco. The plant begins to produce the protein that can then be used as a vaccine. If the virus begins to mutate, as is expected for COVID-19, they can just update the production using new plants.

“That’s the difference between us” and egg-based methods, he said, ”we go directly to producing the vaccine or the antibody without having to propagate the virus.”

As weird as it sounds, I think most people are purchasing TP as a joke. My wife just did it when we have 60+ rolls in the closet. My neighbor and wife bought the last rolls on the shelf (that was fully stocked 5 hours prior) just because.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out later that this was a toilet paper manufacturer social media scheme to get a viral video out there. I'm not too worried about TP with what is no worse than the common flu. It's all a joke I think. I don't know one person taking this seriously. It's kind of weird....

From what I’ve seen, heard, and surmised, kids don’t really get COVID-19. They are carriers though. This is a blessing and a curse. A blessing because no kids have died except one newborn born with it in China... super special circumstances. A curse because the kids can spread this undercover. They’re running around healthy, maybe a little sniffle, and sharing the pathogen at school, then they give it to their parents or grandparents.

That’s going to be impossible to stop.

Interesting, eh?

"Don't call it the Wuhan Virus, that's Racist. But let's call it the Trumpvirus. Also, stop politicizing this deadly disease that is Trump's fault as it spread through communist China like wildfire and thus the world. Finally, none of the problems in the last few months are a wake up call about sourcing basic hygiene and medical supplies from China."
684   Patrick   2020 Mar 13, 9:49am

It's kinda nice to have something to distract everyone from all the electoral bullshit.

Maybe there should always be quarantines when visiting any foreign country. People would value international travel more if it were harder. And it was always kind of insane to shoot big tubes of people through the sky all day, all over the world, spreading every disease they catch to everywhere else. It's like having everyone in the world sharing needles in a way.

It's also good that our dependencies on China for drugs and manufacturing are made really clear by shortages.

There are some damn good arguments against globalization being made clear by this.

If you plan to visit Sydney there is an interesting hotel there: it's called Q Station (where Q stands for "quarantine"). This is basically a well-preserved former quarantine station which was in use as such from early 1800 till mid 1980s. Staying there gives you a perspective on how the things were before "big tubes of people shooting through the sky all day".

Angel Island in the SF Bay was used that way during a similar time range.

OBAMA PLAGUE!

This was the Obama Plague; far deadlier to Americans.

Remember when multiple cruise ships were infested?

Also, remember how the Media consistently contextualized Ebola and didn't make it the only story on TV?

CA containment seems to be working as NY and WA keep running away. Bay area has 168 total, SF just 18. Work from home works. Europe is new epicenter, Italy doing slowly better due to containment. Why Merkel doesn't do anything beats me.

She may be literally trying to kill off as many old Germans as possible.

She has already betrayed Germany completely by importing a million violent Muslim men.

Why would she not go further to destroy Germany? She has no children, she doesn't have a future.

Agreed but that's so obvious at some point they must revolt against that traitor. It's one thing to let things slip but to be so brazen and do nothing and come out saying shit like that. Well at least all the younger ones will build up immunity first lol. I mean the poor elderly literally nothing is done for them in Germany. Heartless.

Fuuuuck... I'm starting to get refund requests for my Maui condo on VRBO. I clearly state no refund within 60 days of check-in and clearly recommend that they purchase travel insurance when they make the reservations. So far the 3 that are asking didn't get the travel insurance.

So far there are no flight cancellations or anything like that insurance would cover anyway...

What do you guys think I should do? Due to the contract I'm not at any obligation to return one cent.
