What do PatNetters think the US reaction should be (if any) to China's abrogation of "one country, two systems" ?

Increase tariff on China 5% per month until it's rescinded.

Nothing. But we should takes steps to bring our manufacturing back and not rely on China for anything.

Offer Hong Kong citizens US citizenship. You know how liberals wanted to import the entire nation of Syria into the US? That would have been bad given the lack of education and the nature of the behavior of the citizens within that country. Here's an opportunity to import massive amounts of highly educated English speaking people who work for a living.

Close our embassy there and treat Hong Kong as a part of China. We can offer citizenship to those who want it. Maybe put it in a raffle with the UK, Canada, etc.

Hong Kong is to China, as Greater Jerusalem is to Israel, as Crimea is to Russia, as Guam is the the US.

And besides, we have enough problems of our own to worry about before worrying about everyone else's problems.

I say who the fuck cares. I've been to HK, it's a shithole like every other ex-Japan asian country.

Go ahead wreck china and isolate it, but they can have HK..

Um, no: China has acquired HK legally albeit with conditions (which it is now violating). Russia has invaded and annexed Crimea completely illegally in violation of many bi- and multilateral treaties.

False analogies are not helpful.

It's an awesome pretext though. And it would be hard for donkeys to object to it w/o exposing themselves as total and complete hypocrites ( which, of course. they are).

Invite them in, as long as they are not members of the Chinese Communist Party.

I would be happy the entire population of San Francisco were replaced with people from Hong Kong. It would be a huge improvement.

But they have to be 100% loyal to the US. No dual citizenship.

Treaty Schmeaty, Bro. The analogy is about power, and who has it.

Like President Jackson said before evicting the Cherokees from the south, "(Supreme Court Justice) John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it!"

Great point. Empty out the freedom loving people and invite them in. Although they will just emigrate to Califoria and be fucked anyhow.

We are a friend to liberty, but masters only of our own. We do not invite foreign entanglements. HK was a 99-year lease to the British. China allowed it to be a free trade zone for several years. Now they are re-integrating HK into the rest of China. If we were in the same position, we could choose to do the same.

All of us have opinions about the current Chinese government. Few of us have any quarrel with the Chinese People. If some wish to become citizens, we could offer a path to citizenship, provided they can show some capability to be a productive citizen and make a contribution to the strength of the USA. We don't want new burdens - we have our own to take care of. A prospective citizen should bring productive skills, demonstrated abilities to earn or add value, or investment in USA prosperity.

There is not much we can do. Hong Kong was signed over in the late 1990s to China from the United Kingdom. The Chicom crackdown may affect Hong Kong's economic growth as it may grow at a slower rate, as it may lead to some money exodus and shunt some future investments. But I think it will be gradual and play out over at least 5 years.

The US should just not be as reliant on China for commerce, even if it means more reliance on Mexico, Latin America, Vietnam, Philippines, and India for low cost manufacturing.

Fellas, the treaty is between China and the UK, not the USA.

And thus, the UK should offer Hong Kongers, a path towards UK citizenship, as PRC has revoked the original terms of engagement and the fact that HK was once a British colony.

In some ways, we did the same for many Vietnamese and Cambodians, as it was the US's engagement in Southeast Asia which led to many of those displacements via the war.

Plus, don't forget, one can still see hoes in England, just like in Hong Kong.

I'm guessing that most people in Hong Kong under the age of 40 speak very little English. If I'm not mistaken, part of Hong Kong's affluence is as a tax haven; that's a smart strategy for a tiny country, but doesn't scale.

Patrick, you or I, respectively, can get a British or an Irish passport, in addition to Uncle Sam, if we really wanted and got some of our distant relatives, who don't hate us, to give some family reunion sponsorship. Yes, I know about the investor route but I'm saving that for New Zealand or Australia during old age.

So with that stated, the reason why ppl from the PRC can't have dual citizenship is because most east Asian countries don't allow it.
