No reason why you can't use a MG set with a DC motor for a pure sine wave AC generator. This type of setup would also allow for startup motor current spikes to not be a problem either. Probably more reliable then using semiconductors as well.

Most large motors use three phase power, which is better able to balance the reactive loads.

Any powerful motors create a tremendous power draw when first spinning up.
