From a reader:

I've commented to a few others about my perceptions, exactly the same as in the article above.

This is a major reason I suspect that your "Wuhan" virus is my "Ft Detrick" virus -- that the US bioweapons people created it and released it overseas to make it look like it came from there, to cover the criminal failure and looting of our one-percenters, who have wrecked our economy with their policies of peasant labor in across the Rio Grande, skilled labor deported overseas, create a financialization economy to replace our once-unrivaled manufacturing economy, no taxes or penalties for hi-tech, banks, wall street etc.

I was interested in getting a phone with good privacy, the Librem, but they can't say when it will be available because they can't get parts.

My laptop is dying too, and I looked into the Dell XPS 13, but guess what? Six week lead time because of supply chain issues, and they won't even commit to six weeks.

But even your "sweet spot" 1990-2007 cars often have drum brakes in the rear.

Rear is ok. The front does most of the braking anyway.

I'm not on any kind of slope. I have no bones with ABS. And which cars before 07 had "autonomous braking" (whatever it is)? So I know what to avoid. =))

I am joking. Of course you are not a Luddite who will go all the way back to the 30's for a car, nor do I think you are against anti-lock breaks. Autonomous breaking is when the cars front radar/sonar detects an imminent collision and applies the brakes. Honda/Acura stated that in production models around 2003-2004. Kinda common now.

Ah, I remember reading back in the day something about one of these things braking suddenly and violently in front of these metal plates they put over holes in road during construction.... Hopefully they have got better since then. Still don't want any of that stuff in my cars.

Bartenders at Denver airport and restaurants in general. Literally had a bartender clean up and leave 5 hours before the end of his shift at the airport. I guess he had worked 14 days straight for 10-12 hours a day because no one wants to work. Good news is I got his last beer of the day. I guess servers cannot grab a beer there? CO is weird with booze as they ID everyone, yet getting weed is a joke. You can buy enough weed to knock you out in 1 hour, but grabbing 2-3 beers at the airport they need to ID you even if you're obviously 70 years old.

The airport was fucking packed too. Since 2016 I've been out there about 6 times and never had seen it like this. If you've been, the security area and each of the 3 terminals are massive. Easily walked 2-3 miles in that place yesterday and it was packed everywhere. No empty gates like 8 months ago or so.

Not a pick, so do your due diligence, but I'm thinking of picking up a lot more LUV shares after what I witnessed over the long weekend. I don't know their financials well as what I own was just a gut decision after Covid hit and it crashed. All the new routes, 737-Max getting back in the air. Jet-A prices going up I guess could be a concern, but I believe they do contracts and they could have bought low. But round trip, both flights were completely full. No open seats. And I tentatively still haven't gotten Covid as a side note.

With this printed money I think domestic travel is going to be a monster stock wise. From what I witnessed after my first covid flight August of '20 up to yesterday is night and day. DEN was double the people I've seen pre-covid. It was a zoo.

Oh, and go see any show at Red Rocks. Shows #6 & 7 in the books. One of the coolest places in the states with great acoustics to see a show. Preferable a band with a good light show as well, as most now bring their own lights if big enough.
169   AmericanKulak   2021 Jun 22, 11:22am

Are they still doing the retarded every other seat in the terminal before packing people in like sardines cheek to jowl using the HEPA filter bullshit story?
170   Blue   2021 Jun 22, 1:53pm

Home builders are kind of stalled with shortage of all kind of materials including partially lumber or it could be deliberate act to make more profits by build less and bumping the prices with neverending low rate QE.
171   mell   2021 Jun 24, 1:05pm

Most contractors are pretty booked and now just reschedule, no-show and cancel on a whim even if they work for a larger corp. They know they can do whatever they want as in xidens US of A nobody works anymore. Repair for appliances takes weeks if not months. on the upside the xiden inflation is lifting stocks and the gains just keep flowing from the QE juice. Furthermore housing hyperinflation is now a real possibility, with house prices continuing to rise fast (except for severe shitholes, even moderate shitholes are being lifted by those fleeing the severe shitholes) with no end in sight.

I was just in airports and there were stickers telling people to sit apart, but no one enforcing it.

Right, the filter story is obviously bogus. Several hundred people packed together and zero filters between them.

Pet food:
https://bestlifeonline.com/pet-food-shortage-news/

King noted that a 9.7 percent increase in pet food sales between 2019 and 2020 had put a strain on supply chains that are already struggling with a shortage of raw materials needed to make the products. Worker safety protocols at production facilities and labor shortages are also playing a factor in the supply chain hiccup.

If your cat or dog has particular tastes, the current shortage might be especially challenging. Canned wet pet food is in particularly short supply thanks to a surge in demand and existing production limitations, Sumit Singh, CEO of online pet supply company Chewy, says.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/is-there-a-pet-food-shortage-170004107.html

"Wet food is a really popular category within pet food and it makes up roughly 20% or 30% of the category. What's happening is a high quality problem to have actually. Three or four manufacturers produce wet canned food in the United States and they were running high utilization levels given the secular trends in pets and the demand arrived, and shot the capacity constraints. So as a result, you have an imbalance and a bit of a shortage," Singh told Yahoo Finance Live.

Singh continued, "The shortage is at the industrywide level, so like isolated out of stocks. We are working very closely with these manufacturers and vendors to be able to course correct. It's going to take a few months before new capacity comes online, but ultimately there should be new capacity released into the marketplace and the situation should go back to normal. We are being hyper vigilant on this right now, and so far we are not seeing material loss of demand and momentum as a result of this."

Other places have indicated that it's mostly canned food due to supply issues with the cans.

Actually never noticed this before because my last cat died a few months ago and I have a shitload of leftover canned cat food

The housing bust destroyed the construction industry of talent too. Still hasn't recovered. No one got into construction trades from 2007-2014 roughly. You lost roughly 6 years of construction trade education/learning on the job. Supply of labor is really short. Double down now with stimulus for a fake pandemic and I'd avoid any major project right now at all costs if you can.

Maybe things will balance out, but housing and construction is in a really weird spot. It's too expensive to get labor and materials so RE just goes up because little new construction is being built, even in once hot markets. Don't see a crash, but I definitely think we're nearing a plateau if there's no more stimulus. When everyone goes running back to jobs to make money again, wages won't go up in line what we've seen with the recent inflation, they'll go down theoretically with more people fighting for a job. Everything more expensive and dropping wages is what I see.

I once hired a maid to help with housework, but my wife spent so much time cleaning before the maid came that she didn't want any more maids.

Right? After five years, mine finally just straightens up a bit and lets it go at that. Some women she’s referred our house cleaner to just couldn’t handle the situation, and created so much drama that our housecleaner dropped them almost immediately as clients. Every single Latina woman was incompatible with a Latina housecleaner. Must be a cultural thing. Also one Indian woman couldn’t deal with the situation either. We no longer refer our lady to any friends who are Latin.

In the end I got the Pinebook laptop for $220 or so:

https://pine64.com/product/14%e2%80%b3-pinebook-pro-linux-laptop-ansi-us-keyboard/?v=0446c16e2e66

It's not high-quality, but fine as a backup.

Now they are suspending production because of lack of parts - probably parts from China...

That's the one I use. Had to buy it about a year ago when the reconditioned one I'd bought about six years earlier for $750--which worked to perfection, the best computer I ever had--began showing a "low power notice" every morning. Plus, I had been using Windows 7 from time immemorial with no problem either.

I was wondering why canned soda was so fucking expensive lately.
184   AmericanKulak   2021 Oct 4, 2:41pm

Sucralose shortage continues here in Central Florida.

Another shortage: Best Buy looked like the day after Christmas. Things like USB Hubs, Bluetooth Adapters, etc. half empty shelves.

No printers except a handful left. Ink and Toner unavailable for popular models. Looked on Amazon and Office Depot, they did not have them either. Was Cannon 72? something I think.
185   Bd6r   2021 Oct 4, 2:43pm

Ammo is back, but there is less choice and prices are higher than before the shortages by about 20-40%.

Shoot, I saw available Magtech .40 S&w for $37.99 box of 50 with the aholes selling it saying it was a great deal. Couple years ago you could buy that for $17.99 or less if you caught it on sale. We’re living in a shit show of dollar devaluation and supply shortages. I would love to become an ammo manufacturer….

Pro Tip: Kinko's is now FedEx Office.
198   WookieMan   2021 Oct 5, 7:07am

The food situation is becoming weird for shortages. Menu sizes are shrinking and we're routinely told at restaurants they don't have a certain app or dish. Crap food, I know, but we'll get Lunchables for the kids sometimes and those are hard to find around here right now.

Obviously still labor shortages in a lot of service industries. My kids school district cannot find bus drivers for a mindless job anyone can do for $25/hour. In a town of 2,000 most parents drive their kids. They literally could just drive the bus and make $100 a day or more if they take high schoolers to activities or field trips.

Not the best money, but might as well if you're doing it anyway. I'd honestly do it for some side gig money, but I have a lunch beer or two once in a while and I do not want to get a felony DUI with kids on a bus. Also don't know if it falls under CDL laws of .04 BAC for all driving like it does for semi drivers, even in your private vehicle. At least that's how it works here in IL.

Labor is the biggest issue as it trickles down into products. I know Amazon is shunned by a lot of people, but Prime has basically gone away as far as speed of delivery goes. I use it being out in hillbilly country for 2 day delivery, but that's not happening now. Usually 5 days and sometimes more. So we just do a bunch of driving to get shit. Planning better if we're going to be out and grab what we need/want.

Under Section 8 some people pay as little as 10%, but that seems too much to ask in a lot of cases.
201   Automan Empire   2021 Oct 5, 8:55am

Was shopping small sawmills. All the manufacturers show boilerplate on their website, "Now accepting orders for delivery in 2022 or 2023."

I dabble in Shou Sugi Ban (japanese burned/dyed wood technique) and the huge dye supplier is limiting quantities and out of numerous colors.

A year ago there were literally a million choices of 18650 lithium battery for sale on Ebay, now there are just 1 or 2 sketch looking sellers with inventory and many lithium sizes are low inventory or NA.

Dozens of Containerships sit offshore at the LA harbor waiting to be offloaded. Is this a transport/distribution problem?
