Yes, it has. In fact, in the run up to the election pitting Jefferson (of the newly created Democratic Party) against John Adams (Federalist), the Federalists passed the Alien and Sedition Act which made it a federal crime to oppose the current (Federalist) establishment.

This shit has been with us for over 200 years.
